Scrabble for the iPad is everything you would expect it to be, thus the 5-star rating.
However, I have a significant feature request, namely the "tile rack" app for the iPhone/iPod Touch requires that each player have their own iphone to play. It would be sensible to allow a single iPhone/iPod to be passed around to the various players and have it display each of their respective tile racks in turn.
This is by far the most used app my wife and I have. We have 'Pass n' Played' hundreds of rounds on our iPod touch and the iPad version just raises the bar. Only drawback is the lack of a true Scrabble dictionary--a real surprise that one remains to be included in this version.
From actual use on the iPad - fabulous.
My buddy and I have been playing with our iPhones, and the tile rack is the bomb-diggity! And we get this nice gigantic scrabble board on my iPad
The game could be great, but suffers from a couple glitches and a limited dictionary. Network play on this is just terrible. It regularly drops connections or loses sync with other WiFi players that are all nearby, network monitoring shows no loss of connection or data packets. It's an implementation issue. The party play mode using iPhones is a great concept. But the connections are so flakey, it takes all the fun out of it.
The game skill levels are annoying too. I have not tried Easy. The Normal setting is pretty easy, I have yet to lose to the computer on Normal and regularly beat it by 100+ points. On Hard, I can beat the computer about 30% of the time, but I'm going to come right out and say that it cheats. It's not good AI by any stretch, it just stacks the tiles in its favor so it can win. The sheer probability of a player scoring 3 Bingos in 4 turns nearly every game is not very likely, and yet the computer does it regularly. Two in a row is very common, I've seen three in a row twice.
There are two dictionary options to choose from (English-TWL and M-Webster) and both are very crippled and downright annoying. So many common words that should be in there, but are just not. The M-Webster option is totally worthless and does not have entries for a great many words, here's a couple off the top of my head from a recent game session or two:
VULCANISE / VULCANIZE / VULCANIZATION
AMORTIZE / AMORTIZATION
This is NOT a copy of Webster's dictionary, by any stretch of the imagination. Furthermore, both dictionaries have serious conflicts as we can use words like EARTH, VENUS (VENUs is only in the English-TWI in-game dictionary) and MARS, but not JUPITER, URANUS, NEPTUNE or PLUTO. I understand the restriction on proper nouns and names of places or theological figures and it seems most are not present within the game dictionaries, but a certain level of consistency needs to be upheld.
The in-game volume control does not work for music played from your music library. Exiting the game does not stop playback of music from the iPod library if the game initiated it.
So my comments to EA & Hasbro are this... Please incorporate a good in-game dictionary. You don't need multiple options, but one good one that actually serves its purpose and maintains consistency. And hire a network programmer that knows what they are doing on these devices.
I love these reviews from "I think this will be great" I have played it on IPAD and it is a great game. Graphics are awesome and a lot of fun!
Thanks for bringing the controller. I look forward to playing this way.
The Party Play mode, with iphones for controllers, seems awesome... But it just froze and didn't save. Cool game night turns sad as all our play is for naught. If it worked it'd be awesome. This'll be 5 stars when an update makes it reliable.
Oh yeah! This is a great app for this device. Much improved.
Read the reviews before purchasing. This game crashes when you use the iphones and the tile rack program. Both in bluetooth and wifi modes. Do not purchase if you plan on using it in conjunction with tile rack.
We've been using the iPhone version for 2 years, struggling with the constant Wifi crashes and disconnections that never have been fixed. We hoped that the iPad version would be better.
In some ways, it is. Bluetooth seems to work better than Wifi (if only they'd switch to bluetooth on the iPhone version, it might solve those problems).
However, while well-intentioned, the iPhone Tile Rack feature doesn't work that well. You cannot place the tiles on the board, just move them over to a rack on the board, where you must then reach over and place them. Awkward. And you must press play on the iPad, cannot on the iPhone. Nor can you recall the letters from the iPhone. We tried it a couple of times, and abandoned it.
We thought Dictionary would be a great feature, but it isn't really a dictionary (giving you meanings) but just tells you if the word is in their word list. And that word list, apparently, even if you choose the TWL (tournament word list) is incomplete, having arbitrarily removed 'some offensive or obscure words'. Really? By whose standards? This makes serious play impossible, as valid words in the official TWL are rejected with no appeal. As with the iPhone app, there is no option for by the official rules play: where if you play a word not in the list, the opponent must either accept or challenge. Instead, it just rejects the word, encouraging the play of words you don't know are words (cheating, really).
For $10, EA should do better. Quite disappointing.
Playing a full game in "Party Mode" (where each player uses their iPhone or iPod touch as a letter tray) without some sort of failure occurring is almost impossible. If any player loses their connection to the iPad, they are permanently removed and forfeited from the game. There is no way to reconnect after this happens, so the game is essentially over. If a player lets their iPhone/iPod auto-lock, they lose their connection. Any hiccups in the wi-fi or bluetooth connections will also drop players permanently. If the iPad app crashes (which it does frequently), there is no way to resume the previous game session (the instructions inside the app say differently, but after five separate crashes, we have not once been able to pick up the game where we left off). There is no way to save a game session and resume it later. There NEEDS to be some way to save and protect a game in the event of a crash or connection issue, and the fact that there isn't is a lazy, stupid oversight on EA's part.
SAVE YOUR MONEY until EA fixes these glaring issues.
I just want to let you know that my brand new IPad had crashed while playing Scrabble yesterday.
We lost an hour each time we hit a bug. After a play (from a tile rack app on an iPhone) that player's score would just spin out of control, and the game became unresponsive. There's no saved state, so you're just screwed.
The concept is awesome, the execution is obviously rushed. I'll be back after an update.
My favorite game just got even better! This game is the bomb!! EA has set the bar for innovation on the iPad. Can't wait to play party mode. LOVE IT!

Better than the iPhone app!
I hope they fix the bugs because this app is constantly crashing. This is especially noticeable when playing through Facebook connected games.
I really like the interface, but I haven't been able to get the program to give me notification of turns through badges/push (like the iPhone app USED to do... seemingly lost this ability as well) and it crashes everytime I try to create a facebook game on it.
I also don't understand why this takes so long to load compared to other apps that are dealing with significantly larger processing requirements.
Fix the bugs and I up the stars. I tried contacting EA directly through their website, but their support page is horrifying and impossible to use. At this point this is not worth the $10.
'Create game' dialog freezes after first player is added, when creating an ipad game with Facebook players. To add to the difficulty, finding support link on EA's website was next to impossible.
