I love to draw, paint and of course publish my art. Hmmmm, I would say this program is awesome if I didn't own ArtStudio. I love ArtStudio and use it for some time now. I assumed that if I buy Brushes which costs couple times more I can expect much more from it than from ArtStudio but now I know I was wrong. I don't really understand how one program can cost couple times less and offer more functions, options and of course provide better user experience. I guess the price is not always the best decision maker. ArtStudio should increase or Brushes should decrease its price. If you're looking for program to draw on your iPhone or iPad go with ArtStudio ($0.99) or Sketchbook ($7.99). Sketchbook has great brush variety and many more features as well.

I create art on a computer for a living, so the iPad is quite fun. Brushes stands out from the crowd for various reasons, here's some important ones. 1) The exporter. This is what takes the iPad from toy to pro tool. It will repaint the image up to 6x the original size. Produces a great base painting for a large format print (over 4k x 6k) with detailed texture, no pixel problems. This makes it a nice mobile companion to a digital art setup. You can bring any of your Brushes paintings into Photoshop or Painter with hi res brush marks and no scaling artifacts, ready for detailing and finalization. The only other app capable of yielding print res is Adobe Ideas, which is hi res in-app. It's vector based, and while nice, it's not as painterly. 2) Less can be more. The Brushes interface is clean and the tools are well done. Those who see the simplicity and claim Brushes is just for kids must need menus and sliders to feel talented. 3) Layer blend modes. No explanation needed. 4) In-app gallery playback and movie exporter. I've always made time-lapse speed painting videos for presenting my portfolio, which takes time. Brushes does it automatically. *The one necessary thing that's missing is a nice, fast smudge tool. Otherwise, fantastic app!

Three stars for thanking the creator for all the hard work. 1. There seems to be some performance hit from the smoothing feature. Adding an option to disable it would be nice, coz I would rather have quicker stroke response than than having a little improvement on line appearance. 2. The update broke the replays of my existing work.
 vierge99
Even after some time on the iPad with nearly every paint app natively adapted, Brushes remains the best. The newest update brings brush smoothing yet still keeps painting speed and responsiveness high. Much better than ArtStudio and Sketchbook. It may not have all the crazy bells n whistles but it's the most seamless painting experience. The GUI stays out of the way but is always near when you need it. The only thing it needs to be complete is a bucket fill and line tool. Nothing fancy, just simple like MS Paint.

I read through many reviews and comments, and as expected in this world and the "art world" opinions are always different. Duh... This app is a must have, forget about the price and look at what it provides. Some are saying that it does not provide enough features for the cost, and that other apps give you more. This may be true but to me this is almost like saying that Acrylics are better than Oils. With that in mind this app is like Oil paints, smooth, free flowing, responsive, you can leave it for awhile and come back to it easily. The features and functions that it provides are not complicated making it a great app for the true painter! As a professional artist with two degrees, working on a master, and a full time educator, this app as well as a few others are a must have. Brushes, more of a painters app loose free expressive. Sketchbook Pro while being very similar feels more like a graphic designers app, with more complexity. Art studio a crossover of a simple paint program with some great features. All three highly recommended.

Thanks for the update. Adding layer modes was a great feature to add. As far as brush options go, the two additions are OK. The opacity changes in the speed of the stroke feel pretty good. The brush size changes feel nothing but awkward. They currently feel the oppose of what they should. Adding more natural brush controls like min and max for brush size and opacity would make this an app I would probably actually use. As of right now it makes a good app to "have".

Just updating my review for 1.1. Brushes adds some nice features like the velocity controlled density and size . I like the smoothing. I like Brushes on the iPhone and now the iPad version is even nicer because it's so much larger, fluid and fast to work with. Brushes feels more natural to work with than SketchBook from Autodesk. But that is my personal preference. I use several paint programs. They all have their merits. I would like to see in the next update a smudge brush, adding difference to the layer blend mode and gradient fills. Thanks for making such a nice paint program.

This app is well worth the price. I tried Sketchbook first. It is good and has a couple more features, but this app is much better. They got the feel of the controls just right. The feature set isn't bad, but I'd love to see masking and filters. This program is really great. It is very fun and intuitive to use. This is just one of the core apps you should have on your iPad (even if you're not an artist).
 Joey Livingston
Brushes for iPhone was always amazing, but the iPad has a much bigger drawing surface, making it a much better platform for art. Brushes for iPad takes full advantage of the larger interface. Like its iPhone counterpart, the interface is so simple and elegant, and it stays out of the way and lets you paint without thinking about much of anything app related. The high resolution redraw on Brushes desktop viewer is 1000 times more useful for the iPad app, because you are able to provide so much more detail for the redraw process to work with. Very happy with this app! Update: The new brushes are amazing! I love the the path smoothing (I haven't noticed any significant performance hit caused by this feature, only mountains of awesomeness really). The layer transformation is amazing to have in Brushes. The pressure simulation adds an amazing amount of expression and inspiration to every stroke, and inspires me to draw and paint all the more!
 chuston
I am not much of an artist but I just blew 5 hours finger painting with Brushes and had a ball the whole time. Brushes has some surprising features in it. Layers, blend modes, and opacity to name a few. I was able to use a trick from Photoshop where an "overlay blend mode layer" is painted on with white/black as a way to dodge and burn which can be used in portrait retouching to add depth to an image. It works in Brushes too! Worth every penny.
 Alirixan
Very elegant app, easier to use with the iPad. Painting, viewing and exporting is all made easy. A lot of fun to play with....and for serious artists, quite impressive. Support for questions is absolutely first class. Thank you.
 analogcabin
I have some of the others and this is my favorite. I dislike overly technical drawing apps. This developer keeps it simple and direct. One tip you may need: press and hold to get the eyedropper.
 Cnell
To IndyCarFan who asked about the photo orientation for export.. You can click the little settings gear in upper R corner and tap Properties and tape the thumbnail and rotate the painting. Very easy and useful. Anyway, I loved Brushes on the iPhone and now even better on the iPad. Like having a mini Wacom Cintique!! Thanks for adding more layers and video. Wow!!!! Thank u for the new update. This definitely puts Brushes for iPad at the very top!!!
 UltimaOnliner
I have both this app and the Autodesk painting app. They are both fine apps with different strengths and weaknesses. Neither apps are (yet) replacements for Photoshop CS or Gimp desktop programs. They are both drawing and painting apps with limited use of layers. The Autodesk app looks like it has more bells and whistles but has the same limitations of brushes. Neither apps have selection tools, path or pen tools, gridlines, etc. What they both allow is the use of different brushes to paint using layers. Autodesk has more brushes but really this Brushes app feels more natural to use. The user interface is a bit simpler in Brushes and more straight forward. Brushes also has far, far more undo levels than Autodesk, which is very limited in that regard. I also like the fact that Brushes is made by a single developer who loves making this app instead of a corporate machine making software.
 Jstd
Brushes - iPad edition is simple enough for amateurs and advanced enough for professionals. Simply the best drawing app available.
 Kriswatt
I was hoping for *way* more since I saw it featured during apple's presentation/ demonstration of the iPad. But for the same price, sketchbook pro does soooooo much more -- More tools and even exports to Photoshop! I was really impressed with sketchbook pro and pretty disappointed in brushes. The things I liked about brushes was the gallery, and the play back option which redraws your picture. That was cool. I liked the layers and the full spectrum color pallet, but the brush tools were limited and there was no smudge. Im a graphic designer and I use Photoshop daily. Maybe that has spoiled me and caused me to expect more from an iPad app... But for $7.99, you still get way more from sketchbook pro.
 Randomguyweird
I wish that the app would give the ability to smudge over areas to mix and blend them. Otherwise it's great! Will get stars back when erase function is fixed.
 mcomte
Really like this version! The only thing so far that I think frustrating is that the speed sensitivity is backwards for me: I would want the size/opacity to be thin/fade on SLOW speed and solid/broad strokes on speed. If we could have an option to chose, this would make both worlds happy!
 B3RARD
I have the iPhone version and this version is just as good. It is simple easy to use and is beautiful. Some things I would like to see. 1. Maybe an in app purchase in the iPhone version that would unlock the iPad version. Would be nice to not have two different versions of the same app on my computer. Also would be nice to not have to buy or at least not have to pay full price for an app I already bought for my iPhone. 2. Would be nice if you could import your own brushes or create your own brushes. 3. Would be nice if there was photo editing features and effects added. The app is wonderful for drawing but I would like to have one app to go to for all my drawing/ photo editing needs. 4. Be able to add shapes to drawings. 5. Be able to send photos via Bluetooth, like add and sync drawings between an iPhone and an iPad. 6. More cloud support. Be able to send photos to Facebook, twitter, or picasa or edit photos that are already on those sites.
