Where is the "Save As" ? This app is pretty much useless without it. I use a Word template for quoting jobs. I need to be able to make a few changes before sending to clients, and be able to keep original doc for my next quote. Of all the office apps, none have "Save As". Am I the only one who needs it?
There are two reasons why this app is better that Iworks: (1) the spreadsheet can convert BOTH WAYS with excel: and (2) it becomes a fantastic outliner when using the numbered list with the tab button.
There are three reasons why I did not give it five stars: (1) it is not compatible with Office 2007 (it can read those documents but it cannot edit them); (2) the file list stays on in horizontal mode so you cannot get the advantage of the full screen when working on a spreadsheet or document; and (3) you cannot open an email attachment into this app directly.
If they fix these issues this will be the must-have app for the business user. Other things that would be nice to have are a tab key and capability to edit PowerPoint presentations.
Great concept. And I bought it assuming it wouldn't quite be there yet but hoping that updates will work out the kinks. This kind of app (i.e., one that allows us to not just view but EDIT, SAVE, and TRANSFER back MS Office docs to our laptops is crucial to making the iPad a real Road Warrior device (i.e., let us leave our bulky laptops home!).
So far, it continues to crash on occasion and can't yet handle Office 2007. When it can do that reliably, I'll be happy to give it 5 stars.
4/27/10 (running version 3.2.1) - This app was promising, but when tried to open large excel file - app crashed. Tried with smaller excel files and the app ran sluggishly! Not worth the money until they improve on these bugs. Tried reporting the problems - no response from their "support" team. The app support is non-existent. Have not tried opening Word files, but at this point - why bother. I will update this review if they ever get around to fixing this app. I will date my reviews to make certain people know the exact date of the review and not be fooled.
UPDATE 4/28/10 (still version 3.2.1) - Seemingly can only handle simple excel files. Support finally responded (don't know if it is directly related to the review). They need to fix the bugs! If this could handle complex excel files and not crash, I would give it 5 stars!
Doesn't seem to work with the new Google Docs. Opens none of my docs that were created in the new GDocs editor.
This app is excellent but PLEASE add support for Dropbox!

With this application, don't need the non functioning iWork suite that they order which are not comparable with the rest of the world. The other great thing is that you are also allowed to edit all your documents. All they need is the capability to print and annotate PDF and this would be the complete office solution.
This application is fantastic! I have not had any of the corruption issues that seemed to have been a problem with earlier versions. That issue seems to truly have been fixed which was my only hesitation. I have also purchased Pages and Numbers and while those apps have much more UI polish and look better in a commercial, Office² HD puts them to shame when it comes to actual business work. The ability to save as .XLS is a GodSend.
If you need to use .DOC and .XLS files on your iPad then this is the app you should buy.
Only disappointment is the lack of connectivity to Dropbox.
Would also like ability to interact with PoerPoint.
I love this app. It allows me to have a powerful office suite on my iPad without all the hassle of transferring files via iTunes. It just syncs my stuff in the cloud and via Google Docs. Still some (smaller) bugs, but I just work around them. Their response is very responsive too.
Not as sexy as iWorks, but more functional and uses the power of the cloud.
As of Version 3.2.1 this is the best iPad app I own. I can capture ideas and data as I travel, store them on Google Docs (now that the corruption issue is fixed) and access the files from work on a PC when needed. Latest version also makes creating outlines with indents pretty simple -- which is excellent for structuring ideas.
I desperately need a way to edit google docs on my iPad. Sadly, this app is not the answer. Everytime I try to open a document it says, "unknown error occurred." I just downloaded the app last night (5-1-2010) so I'm using a version that supposedly has a lot of bug fixes. If I were able open documents, then this app might serve a purpose, but as it stands currently, it's only consuming valuable space in my ipad's memory.

There are a lot of document managers coming out for the iPad and most of them are useless, especially iWork which costs a lot more than this.
You can load and save documents locally, via iDisk (which you can't with Pages) and also via Google Docs (which you also can't via Pages or even Safari on iPad) so this thing is a winner immediately.
It does a much better job of preserving file formatting, including tables and images in word documents that Pages ignores, and seems to have more fonts (or just more of the most used ones).
There are a few bugs. You can't copy files from iDisk to the local drive every time, and large files from Google seem to fail too. Also someone mentioned you cannot "save as" which is true (although hardly enough reason to give one star like one idiot did).
Also I haven't found a way to open files from Mail, save them locally and then send back the edit. I'm sure that will come at a later date.
When the little problems are fixed, it'll get 5 stars from me. For now, it's the best Office App for the iPad.
Could use improvements such as a better file system where u can copy documents or perhaps Save As. Needs a tab button. Needs a better toolbar at the top, I would prefer a stacked toolbar as opposed to the confusing one where u have to scroll. Also margin ruler would be nice. Please add templates as well, those would be very useful.
It would be great if they could implement a dictionary/thesaurus into the cut/copy/paste system system.
Also better logo and better icon please, that icon is so so so ugly.
And finally, if it were possible to create/edit power-points that would be awesome. Thanks.
This is an extremely use for app!!! I am a college student and a network administrator, I can not begin to explain how useful this app has been for me. The user interface is very easy to use! The Google Docs & WebDAV support make it really easy to access file from almost anywhere.
The developer support team for this app is amazing! Doesn't matter If I contact them with a question, feature request, or a bug in the app. The always reply to my email with in 24 hours and work hard to help me resolve my issues when possible!
The app as a whole runs really fast even when connecting to my private WebDAV server through the Internet, thee app function just about as fast as accessing file saved to the iPad itself. Editing the files and saving them back to theWebDAV server is just as fast.
The WebDAV server that is built into the app is great as well. It's very easy to set up and access. Which is great cause if I have a paper saved on my iPad for one if my college classes, it's extremely easy to access the WebDAV server built in the app and download the doc to turn in or print out.
The documentation on how to use the app that comes with the app is very useful as well. I highly recommend this app to anyone who is on the go a lot and doesn't want to have to drag out a laptop to look at or edit an excel file or edit/write a word doc. Well worth the price of the app!
I am looking forward to the added features to come In this app!!!
To be fair this app looks pretty good as an office suite
But for some reason it just doesn't load the google doc if the document is created with the new version of google docs. (Spreadsheet is ok)
While all i want to do is to work on my company's file on iPad at home, it makes my $8 meaningless since i cannot uses it to edit document.
Hope the team can release a fix quickly to address this problem.
Bought for the iPad after the rave reviews and for the sync capabilities with iDisk. Works flawlessly in that arena and looks like it has a great interface. However, every Office .doc that I have imported is all scrambled if not illegible?!?!?!? My .jpg logo (not a header) is lost on import; and the footer is slung all the way to the top. I have imported from my iDisk AND through iTunes - all .doc files look the same. Messed up.
I'm guessing I have to create the doc from scratch in order to have the app function correctly, but why reverse engineer what should already work. One minor bug...OK, whole document out of whack.... not ok.
Keep working on it please....
*** UPDATE 5/7/10 *** After talking with Tech Support and doing some trouble shooting, it seems that the program does fine with .doc files as long as they were CREATED in MS Office 2003. I was trying to using my MS Office 2007 and "save as" my .docx files back down to .doc files (Compatibility mode) and they are not working that way. If you have Office 2003, you should be fine. They said they are working on .docx compatibility for future update....
Bought this program because my business uses Google Docs exclusively for sharing and community-editing of documents. I have not yet been able to create, edit or save documents to/from gDocs without losing the document or getting errors that crash the program without saving my work.
*Update: still awaiting an update or solution to create or save files to google docs.
In its current version its just not ready yet. Google Docs integration is a joke. it logs in, I can see my Microsoft Office ".xls" files but not my ".doc" files! (not user-error as I can access all my GoogleDoc files elsewhere). I can't even *start* using it! If I were 10 years younger I'd call that an epic fail.
I would have suggested compatability with Dropbox and a "save-as" function for those of us that use templates, however I think they just need to fix the (mis)advertised features out first!
I will of course change my review when the features are fixed.
