Description

iAnnotates users say it best: Light years ahead of the other PDF annotation apps, an indispensable tool to have, and the reason I bought an iPad. Join the hundreds of thousands of users who turn to iAnnotate every day to read, annotate, and share their PDFs. Improve your productivity, reduce your clutter, and go paperless!
Our development team has designed iAnnotate to enhance your productivity as you work. The apps intuitive interface and comprehensive, customizable set of features let you annotate, manage, and share documents from your iPad. Daunted by a large collection of unorganized PDFs? Then use iAnnotates fully searchable Library to organize, find, and read your documents.
People use iAnnotate as their go-to app for taking notes on lecture slides, annotating important business documents, revising screenplays, grading papers, and much more. For tasks requiring robust annotation and file management, iAnnotate is the only app you need!
CHOOSE FROM THE WIDEST RANGE OF TOOLS: Choose from the pen, highlighter, typewriter, stamps, notes, underline, strikethrough, photo, voice recording, and date stamp functions. Better yet, assemble your own set of custom highlighter colors, draw and import new stamps (such as your signature), and further customize iAnnotate to your needs!
CUSTOMIZE YOUR INTERFACE: Drag and drop the exact tools you need to create custom Toolbars containing your preferred tools. Easily switch between Toolbars with a simple leftward swipe, or open the Toolbar Drawer and select any Toolbar.
CONTINUOUSLY SCROLL: iAnnotate is the only PDF annotation app that allows continuous scrolling through an entire document. Other apps only let you view one page at a time, but iAnnotate gives you both options.
SEARCH YOUR LIBRARY: Use keywords to search the full text of every document in your Library, or, limit your search to new, recent, unread, or annotated documents for more refined results.
NAVIGATE YOUR DOCUMENTS: Our Navigation Panel lets you view documents by their Thumbnails / Bookmarks / Annotations, or the PDF outline, or perform a search that returns results in the document context. You can even search through your annotations and notes!
READ WITH TABS: iAnnotate makes it easy to open multiple document tabs and navigate between them via tabbed reading.
CONNECT TO ACCOUNTS: Sync with iTunes, DropBox, or WebDAV, or open PDFs directly from email or the Web; iAnnotates new Connectivity Tab allows for easy, single-location management of remote accounts and related documents.
FLATTEN YOUR FILES: Compress your annotations into a document to prevent them from being modified. This is useful for preserving signatures or for preventing recipients from deleting or modifying your annotations.
SHARE YOUR WORK: Annotations you make in iAnnotate are fully integrated into the PDF and can be seen and edited on external PDF readers like Adobe Acrobat or Mac Preview.
SUMMARIZE YOUR ANNOTATIONS: Forward text summaries of a documents annotations in the body of an email. Summaries include the type of each annotation, relevant page numbers, and marked-up text (where applicable).
ORGANIZE YOUR PAGES: Insert blank pages, delete pages, and rotate individual pages or all pages at once.
ORGANIZE YOUR LIBRARY: iAnnotates graphical file manager helps you organize your PDFs into folders, with easy drag/drop functionality.
SECURE YOUR WORK: Set an app-level password, or put iAnnotate on lockdown mode; iAnnotate fully supports the iOS Data Protection and Keychain functions.
OUTPUT TO EXTERNAL DISPLAYS: Use the iPad VGA Dock Connector to output your documents on an external display, so that others can follow along as you annotate and present.

This is a good app and key to the iPad. Product support is fantastic. However, not integrating drop box, or email to import and export documents really hurts real life usability in many instances. I am constantly on the road and have no way to hook up to a laptop and make transfers as I am trying to only carry the iPad. I expected this update to include this key feature, and was a bit disappointed to see it not here. Hopefully, very soon.

I am a scientist, and I read and review dozens of journal articles each year - I love that I now am carrying my entire library of journals everywhere on the iPad in iAnnotate. iAnnotate is currently the only app that allows me to markup, comment, and highlight (along with copy/paste) PDF files, and it does those things quite well. The UI is a tad unintuitive, but there are hints that pop up the first time you use each tool. The mechanism for uploading files to the iPad is a bit cumbersome, but I expect that better syncing will be coming along shortly now that the iPad is on the street. The main thing I wish for is the ability to open web PDFs in iAnnotate - that would bring it pretty close to a five-star app for my purposes. Things like integration with journal search and EndNote would also make great additions. *UPDATE* version 1.0.3 has made uploading PDFs much faster and more stable. The ability to delete folders you no longer want is a decided improvement. The devs are making good on the promises they're making in their forums, and I look forward to the upcoming 1.1 update, which promises to address many of the top concerns users have expressed here. I also want to give the support team an extra shout-out for responding quickly and helpfully to many user comments and questions in the Aji forums.

Now that I finally figured out how to send annotated files back to my Mac, I am exceedingly happy with this app. Like others who have posted here, the primary task I wanted my iPad for was to highlight and annotate PDF versions of medical articles (lots of tables, graphs). iAnnotate lets me do this readily and, even better, lets me use my finger to highlight. As for adding notes, I can either type them in or I can use the pencil tool to add handwritten notes. For those of you struggling to send documents back to your computer, these instructions might help: 1) Don't try to do it over WiFi. Rather set up an ad hoc network on your computer and connect the iPad to it. This was crucial on my Mac. I'm not sure how crucial it is on a Windows machine. 2) When you are done annotating hit the + in the upper left and find the document name and tap on the little i next to it. You should now see the file name and an UPLOAD button. (If you don't see the upload button or it is dimmed, that's probably because you haven't made a proper connection to the network.) Tap on the upload button and the file will go over to your computer. Alternatively, while the file is still open, you can simply tap and hold on the tab for the file until the same dialog shows up and then hit the UPLOAD button. 3) I had major problems connecting to the server (i.e. to my ad hoc network) until I removed the Apple case from my iPad. Since the WiFi antenna is located behind the black Apple logo (which is why it is black and not aluminum) I can only assume that the neoprene case was, in some way, interfering with the WiFi signal. BTW, I believe the developers are working on a more standard way to move files back and forth via USB and iTunes, the same way Pages and Numbers doe. In the meantime, this works just fine. Hopefully, a more detailed manual will eventually be forthcoming as well. However, I applaud Aji for focusing their first efforts on improving the app and the user interface with respect to file transfer. In summary, this app is worth its weight in gold. Snarf it up now while it is on sale!

...for research (reading and annotating pdf's) and writing reports. You can copy/paste from the pdf's into Pages. Great customization, annotation capabilities, and customer support. Text rendering is not as bad as another reviewer states. Once 1.1 comes out with the ability to open from within emails, this will be a 5 star app (in the works). MobileMe integration in the future for both upload and download will be anticipated, but as long as I can import from email and send in email, I am happy. This app completes what I was looking for when buying the iPad for school work (since Pages can't import pdf's - that is another issue). Now, if we can just get the textbooks up and running, get OS 4.0 (for better multitasking), improve on magazine subscriptions, and make Blackboard fully functional (within an app, not Safari - or at least optimize Bb for Safari) then we have the ultimate Notebook killer for college students. In several ways it is already a great business travelers tool, eating away at the necessity of a notebook.

iAnnotate PDF is an excellent app for working with PDFs. I deal with many large PDFs and need to make notes on most of them. This app does that extremely well. The only reason for four stars is that there are some promised features that are really needed - downloading form the web and document sharing between apps. When the developer has those out as he says he will, this will be a killer app. Until then, the Mac based sharing is OK, but really limits usefulness for on the go professionals.

This is a really nice app that allows me to mark up PDFs. This will be a huge leap in my productivity if I can get comfortable with it and do not have to print out pages to write notes in like I used to. My only complaint, and it is not a minor one, is that I would like to see the pages lock and be able to turn or flip a page, rather than scroll. Having to realign the page every time is a terrible pain when dealing with 100 page documents and you're marking up something in each page. There is a "turn page" button, but it is not perfect, nor does it help if you accidentally move the image. I had to purchase another PDF reader to allow this function for PDFs that I do not anticipate marking up. If this can be fixed it will certainly be 5 stars instead of 4. Other than that, a wonderful app!

I just returned from a multi day legal seminar. We fortunately received a link to all materials prior to the seminar. Most folks loaded them on their laptop. I put mine on my iPad via this app. They looked beautiful, easy to navigate and were a breeze to annotate. I highlighted in different colors, added typed notes and used the "pencil" to mark up other sections. Once I got the hang of things it was great and I definitely learned how to undo. The iPad was far superior to my tablemates' laptops even those who had macs as my battery was not an issue and it took up so little space.

This is the review I wish had existed when I was making my decision. I wasted money on a cheaper competitor and got burned. Don't make my mistake. iAnnotate PDF, uniquely, does: 1. Allow you to SELECT text in a PDF and, thus, COPY/PASTE text from a PDF. 2. Allow you to SEARCH for text in a PDF. 3. Allow you to CLICK LINKS from within a PDF. 4. Allow you to ZOOM IN on a PDF. 5. Present a clean, elegant, intuitive interface. In this app the main functionality of annotating and drawing on PDF's, is quite solid. Also, I like the highlighting in this app because it follows the text. One major flaw: they still need to get the direct transfer working from iTunes, which they've promised to do, because the current transfer process is too cumbersome. Once they get direct transfers working, I will give this app 5 stars. There's already been an update to fix some bug or another, which hopefully means that they're working on this app actively to improve it and will carry through with their promise to get iTunes transfers working.
 Terribly Dissap
I left a review yesterday, and returned today to update it and found that it had been deleted. Is that how this works? Negative reviews get deleted? How does that help? At any rate, this app has potiential. I am a Doctoral student who reads several books and articles a day. All books and articles are in digital format (PDF). I was excited at the prospect of highlighting, annotating, and bookmarking my files. However, this app seems to only support the articles (which is at least acceptable). While some of the pages of the books I downloaded can be viewed, most only show black (Could be a size issue). Also, the pages seem to "float" about the screen when scrolling. This can be cumbersome as I search for a specific item or flick the page in a "lazy" manner (the page floats away and I have to drag it back). The search, annotate, and tab features ROCK! (Especially the Tabs... AWESOME!). When the pages can be "locked" and I can seee all the pages of my entire books, this app will certainly reach 5 star status. If you're going to purchase a PDF app, this is the one to buy. I have purchased other PDF apps and this one out weights them by a mile.
 Toomanybooks
This is a WONDERFUL advance on ebook technology. As someone who has way too many books, and would love to add more without taking up yet more bookshelf space, I have had to hold off because I need to mark up what I read in order to be able to use them in my teaching and writing. This is a fabulous advance for those who need to take notes and mark up their reading. For any reading you have in pdf form, this is my favorite application by far. The transfer of pdf files to the ipad was a breeze, the mark-up is amazing, intuitive, and easy, and transferring your files back to your computer for future reference is also a breeze. THANK YOU for a wonderful application!
 byamabe
The functionality of iAnnotate is why I bought the iPad. I read tons technical documents as PDFs and I wanted to be able to mark them up. This is exactly what iAnnotate lets me do.
 Iadoptearly
I was hoping there'd be an app like this when I bought my iPad. This makes the device a very useful tool. I no longer print out articles and reports. I put 'em on my iPad, read and mark them up with iAnnotate, and then later review my annotations to get a refresher on what I read. Totally worth the $7. Pays for itself just by saving on paper and toner.
 LR Pictures
A really nice start to the app. It's missing a few key features though... It desperately needs the ability to lock down the page position. When I've zoomed in slightly and then use the next page button on the right hand side it repositions the page so that part of the page is covered by my tool window and I keep having to reposition the page. Please push out an update soon with this change and I will be quick to change my review. Great work guys!
 Alicesch17
It does have great potential as mentioned by many others. One more thing that doesn't seem to work quite right, yet, is deleting empty folders. While testing the app I had checked various types of files. I could then delete each file one by one (a "Manage files" option would be nice) but I cannot delete the containing folder. So I end up with a bunch of empty folders here... Otherwise, lotsa good stuff.

We wanted an app that's we could use to mark up PDFs. This app does that extremely well. My wife is on school board and they use all elec packets in PDF. She needed a tool where she could review and annotate the PDF before the meeting, and the mark it up with her notes during the meeting. This app is perfect and well worth the money for those functions. We bought a cheaper app that didn't work as well, couldn't pan and zoom and did not have as elegant of an interface. This one is well worth the few extra dollars. It is missing some polish that is keeping it from 5 stars in my opinion. It needs better integration with iTunes for transferring files rather than installing and running a local server program. It needs a convenient and easy way to export PDFs with annotations. There are also some minor bugs - I occasionally get these stray text boxes at the top of several pages that I can't erase, and trying to crashes the app. This app is very useful right now, and will be 5 star worthy once these are addressed. Great job for version 1.0! Looking forward to some of the promised updates in 1.1.
 katwoman22
Great except no undo if accidentally mark or highlight a wrong line or word that I could find.
 drydeniv
This application gets better with every update. the first couple of versions were buggy, but they have largely figured out what they are doing, and it is much better now. One note to users, I have an issue where PDFs created with Adobe PRO suite won't perform correctly when uploaded to my mac, I am not sure of the reason for this happening, however it is an issue- that is easily fixed with the mac's own - 'print to pdf' feature - sure it is an extra step, but it is worth doing. 5 Star software!
 AstroSnail
An excellent application for those in academia who need to read lots of PDFs. Easy to annotate, intuitive interface. Setup is a bit difficult.
 iPad doc
This app is incredible. As a medical resident, the bulk of my reading consists of medical journals which are always available on PDF format. I have always highlighted and scribbled notes in any text that I read. This allows me to do so with ease. I would recommend it for any one who reads a lot of journal articles. The product is easy to use and data transfer is very easy.
