Description

forScore was designed as a way to take thousands of pages of score with you on the go. By balancing innovative features like the half-page turns with a gorgeous interface and the most robust library organization of any music reader, forScore proves that you really can have an app that’s both powerful and beautiful. Thanks to forScore’s ability to download virtually any PDF file directly from the web, it’s not only the best music reader around—it’s also the world’s most comprehensive library of sheet music in just 1.5 pounds.
From the moment you launch forScore, you’ll see how everything was designed to keep your music front and center. All of forScore’s controls are hidden by default and accessible with a single tap. The visual metronome lets you keep time without extra noise, but also doesn’t take up any extra screen space with annoying popups. Auto-turn and half-turn options allow you to navigate without needing to pause in the middle of practice or performance. Turn your iPad sideways for a larger view of your score, and flick up or down with your finger to see the page.
Don’t let the interface’s simplicity fool you, though—forScore has the most powerful organizational system of any music reader. Tag your files with six unique types of metadata (including an unlimited number of keywords) and let forScore handle the rest with a fully dynamic menu system. Unlike files and folders on a computer, scores can be in multiple places at once, so you can spend more time playing and less time scrolling through menus. You can also create and manage setlists for a fully manual approach to grouping and sorting your files.
When it comes to annotation, forScores flexibility is unparalleled. Create and edit an unlimited number of drawing presets, with full control over hue, saturation, brightness, transparency, and size. Add text to your page with adjustable fonts, colors, and sizes, and leave clumsy controls behind: forScores text boxes adjust their height automatically as you type. Add common musical notation symbols to the page with our unique stamps feature, and you can even draw or import your own designs with our built-in stamp creator. When youre done, you can share your files and annotations with friends via email, bluetooth, or even print them out with AirPrint!
The iPad, with an app like ForScore, is kind of the ultimate sheet music machine, no? -Gizmodo

Ok...I have been championing a product like this since the iPad was released. i personally wrote the major app developers (MusicReader,Musicpad Pro etc) and it seems like this is the start of a great product. The MusicReader program is just ok. I have found it to be very glitchy, and to use it in the future, you have to purchase their $59.95 program on their website. $3 for this is a steal! I was willing to pay the $60 if it was a program that would work for me. It seems that the company listens to the users, and that is a big plus! Thank you for a wonderful new app!

Forscore has continually improved with each update and the first version was fantastic. I am very impressed with the developers and the company which are obviously very proud of their product and are committed to making it the best music reading app out there. It by far is the BEST!! It has changed the way I perform music now. My entire library and repertoire are in the palm of my hand. Thank You again for a great App!!

I run a small blog about Technology in Music Education (do a search if you're interested) and ForScore has been the most exciting iPhone OS application I've seen for a long time. Basically, it is a PDF-based music reader, that will allow you to see your scores in a choral octavo format in portrait mode, in a half-page A4 mode in landscape. There have been a number of updates to the program since its release in April, and the program now includes the ability to annotate music, create set lists, and auto-scale to screen size (not bound by the need for 8.5x11 scans any longer). You can read the release notes and visit the website for yourself. From my experience, this App turns pages faster and more reliably than other music readers, although than can depend on the size of your files. Typically, I scan at 600 dpi, using black and white line art settings (8.5x11 paper). I usually have to blow up choral scores to 105%, and shrink vocal solo books to 97%. I use this app every day with my high school choirs, and it works--although there is still room for improvement, but I know that the developers listen to suggestions and are working on new features...and fixing bugs. If you only have $5 to spend on a music reader, this is the one to get for now...if you have an extra $5, you should also check out Unrealbook. Both of these programs are PDF based and do not require any other special desktop/notebook program to use.

This is actually one of the first ipad apps I show off to other musicians. The possibility of an app like this is one of the reasons I was so excited about the potential of the iPad. One day printed music will be a thing of the past. If I could make one suggestion, if it's possible to detect the whitespace in the margins, auto-zoom it in so the music fills the page. The iPad is JUST slightly on the small side for reading music, and if it would auto-zoom it'd be perfect! If not auto-zoom, then let us zoom into pages, and save the zoom level for each doc (or even page, if possible).

Awesome app!A must for all musicians who owns the iPad. I myself a software developer and was about to write my own app to manage my music sheets library, guess I dont have to do that now. Some essential features that I would like to see in the update, and Ill sure change the rating to 5 stars:1. Ability to create set-list, a must for cover bands like me. Usually I dont know the songs list until I arrives at the gig.2. Search my own library. I have hundreds of songs and I need to be able to search through them (just based on file name is fine), currently, only the preload songs are searchable.3. The search box appears as soon as the screen is touched once (right now it brings up the top menu to displays the metronome and the menu to find the song. Maybe just have it right in between the menu icon and the metronome, so when a user clicks on it, itll bring up the keyboard for searching.) This again is very important for musicians like me who dont know what song will be next, the singer comes up and name a song and I need to be able to search my library, QUICK.4. Have an option to hide the pre-loaded library, its nice to have but not every musician is a pianist and plays classical pieces. Thanks for the great product and Im looking for the updates. Im willing to pay more because at $3, its dirt cheap!

Awsome!!This app is exactly what I have been looking for! Not only is there a substantial amount of preloaded music (piano), but I have the ability to add my own music. Now to the task of converting my sheet music into PDFs...
 atlharp
SuggestionI appreciate the elegance of the page turn, but it is too slow. The measure at the top of the page is the last thing you can see when the page stops turning. Can you make this an option? I would be able to use this app if there were an instant page turn.
 John Beyer
Love it, but...I am a musician/worship leader, I love the ease of use and the fact that I can add all of my chord charts, but I really need an option to make a setlist, some way of grouping 5 or more songs so that I can just tap through the songs we play. If you can make that happen, then I could see a lot of worship leaders and bands using this app. I would give it 5 stars then!!!
 Richard Graeber
Nothing specialThis is a PDF viewer with a metronome. It could (and should) be so much more.
 Michael Klouda
A Great AppThis app has a well thought out interface, which is perfect for a music score program. The sample music is a good selection of traditional classical pieces along with a good number of Scott Joplin songs. The music is clean and clear and looks like a good quality sheet music book (not junky computer generated scores). Being able to add your own music is great (I need to try that next). Would be great if they add more music in future updates - not that there isnt enough now, but something to look forward to.
 BeltwayJim
Really nice, except linkingI love this app. The only negative Ive seen is linking for repeats. An awesome feature, but in large collections with lots of pages it takes forever to get to the link destination, as the default destination is set to the first page and theres no fast-scroll capability in the linking function. Please make default destination the current page, and/or provide rapid page navigation.
 Nicholas Butko
Great start, lots to be done.I am happy having spent $3 on this app as it is, but I really hope some features will be added in the future. 1) The metronome needs a second slider, which is a speed slider. This would let you set the base tempo for a piece, and then let you slow it down or speed it up relative to that base tempo. For example, if a piece wants to be played at 132 bpm, it may be useful to play at half speed, 3/4 speed, 90, and even 5/4 speed in the course of practicing. Rather than trying to estimate the bpm for each of these timings, its easier to set "132" and then change a percentage slider accordingly.2) Alternate sorting and organization methods are direly needed. 2A) For the files I drag into the program, Id like to be able to sort them by, e.g. piano or guitar music. The ability to create organizational folders would be nice. This does not mean the actual files need to be in different folders, which iTunes may not allow, but that the user should be able to organize files in the program, and the program remembers the organization.2B) As a piano beginner, its much less useful for me to search for pieces by composer, and much more useful to search by difficulty. I would love to have something like 10 or 20 skill levels to choose from, and find a collection of pieces at about the right difficulty. This could also focus the developers on which pieces to include. For users such as me, its important to have a wide range of pieces in each difficulty level. 2C) Sorting by instrument. I play classical guitar, so pieces for instruments other than piano are of interest to me.2D) A way to implement this would be to have standard metadata for each file, similar to ID3 tags. This could include fields such as "date," "composer," "difficulty," "instrument". These would be filled in for the provided files, and the user could fill them in for their own files. Sorting could then be done based on these tags. 3) Social component -- It would be valuable to know what other users of the program are playing, and for other users to be able to rate songs. This would help sort through the built in pieces to find the best ones.

Smooth page turning...but lacking everything else so far.First off, i am hanging in there for updates because this concept for the use of the iPad is new, so i am not upset about the $3 i spent. you guys could make this app rock! But my three stars are a complete courtesy. Updates please!! :-) I have a monstrous sheet music library that I use for teaching purposes and gigs. iPad has proven amazing for that purpose so far due to the app Goodreader. I LOVE the way the Forscore app turns pages but it is missing everything else. Goodreader still has to be my app for public performance and teaching. In Goodreader I am able to keep my gigabytes of sheet music categorized when i feel like browsing. There is currently no feature like this yet in forscore. Also, in forscore I couldnt find a way to skip to a later page in a song. If your song is 10 pages (or 200 pages like some of my songbooks) it would take forever to get to the place you need to be. If I missed that feature somewhere I apologize. I am basically looking for something like Goodreader but turns pages like Forscore. Also, Forscore doesnt have WiFi transfer like Goodreader. It would also be great if there were slightly transparent clickable page numbers at the bottom of the screen so that you could quickly go back to previous pages for codas and repeats especially in pop songs. Also, I just spent $6 on the iannotate app so that I could annotate my sheet music. Now I have three apps this I wish one would do. Goodreader and Forscore do not annotate.I hope this helps, I have faith that updates will fix all of these things! Best of luck you all!

Version 2.6.1I highly recommend this application. The had a problem with version 2.6. Customer service/technical support was highly responsive and corrected the issue pretty much immediately. Its nice to have that type of support. I love the features of the app. I have over three hundred charts, scores and sheet music loaded onto on iPAD. It is cool.
 macfrankencow
Im lovin it!I have moved all my sheet music to this program, and use it daily now when I practice guitar. I love frequent enhancements (ie, split page turning, and airturn wireless foot pedal page turning support), as well as all the customizations. It a very polished app that keeps getting better!
 Toiletpaper
Slow page turn bug still unfixedI want to rate this app five stars, but this bug still persists updates and updates later and its the only thing stopping me from using this app. From my experience, when you upload certain PDF scores from your email that are larger in size to forscore, forscore adjusts the size to fit the screen, but in return takes 5+ seconds to turn the pages and bugs out when turn is pressed before a turn is completed. Now I dont mean larger in size memory wise, in fact some of my non-working scores are smaller than scores that are actually working in the app, but larger in size meaning just a big PDF. Hope that made sense. Because its a big PDF, its resized in the app, and than the bug happens. I hope this can be fixed soon.

One of the Best PDF Music Readers--and Committed to ImprovementIts been a while since I updated my review of this app. Ive owned ForScore since it was released in 2010. The program has improved a lot over the last year, which shows that the company is committed to the app. Ive got a ton of iOS apps that have been abandoned by their developers over time.In the most recent version, 2.6.1, ForScore corrected some bugs within 24 hours of their previous "major" release. In the last release (2.6), they answered a couple of my long-standing concerns with the app (fade during annotation and the tap & hold function for annotation [didnt like it].ForScore listens to feedback--it doesnt mean theyll drop everything to implement it, but they get around to it when they can.Since the start, ForScore has had a way to cache page turns yielding fast page turns, even with the "pretty graphics" of the app. As music readers go, it is certainly the most aesthetically pleasing. The iPad 2 only adds more speed to the process. There are still some things Id like to see...but Ill share those directly with the developers. If you only have $5 to spend on a PDF music reader, this is a great one to get...if you have an extra $5, you should also check out Unrealbook, which has changed a lot since its release (a huge update is coming). Both of these programs are PDF based and do not require any other special desktop/notebook program to use.

From MPP to ForScoreI have worked with a Music Pad Pro for about 7 years now. I am a classical organist and conductor with young onset Parkinsons disease and while my playing is not overly affected yet, I began having page turning problems. Face it, the healthiest of us have page turning problems! This past weekend was my first solo run with iPad and ForScore. I use the BT105 foot switch for page turning and it was a flawless run. I can turn multiple iPads with the BT. My handbells love it!The music is easy to load, the clarity is exceptional - especially when compared to the MPP which has always had clarity issues. Ive been working with ForScore for about 3 months now... Initially I didnt care for the overlay screen for metadata ( markings etc ) because it faded the original page making it difficult to read. Next version, problem solved. My only other issue was resizing a page to use the most screen real estate to the best advantage. This version, problem solved. Music Pad Pro -$800ForScore $4.99 ...and you have a perfect professional reason to buy an iPad!I strongly recommend ForScore.
