Do you like Air Display? Please take the time to leave a User Review whenever you update the app. Let people know how you use Air Display!
Ever wish you had an extra display for your Mac or Windows computer? Theres an app for that! Air Display turns your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch into a wireless display, to extend or mirror your computer screen.
“Have you ever looked at your iPad and thought, ‘That would make a great second monitor for my computer!’?” —Wall Street Journal
“The app worked like a charm by providing more screen real estate.” —USA Today
“Air Display lets you take advantage of the iPad’s native touch screen, meaning you can use your finger to move your mouse around.” —TIME
“10 Apps That Make Magic on Your iPad… Never again miss a new Twitter post, Facebook post or stock market move.” —New York Times
— FEATURES —
Air Display not only gives you a wireless computer screen extender, but also works as a tablet input device. You can use your finger to draw directly on the screens surface. Try it with a calculator, painting tool, or music control surface! Simple gestures allow you to operate the right mouse button and scroll wheel.
Air Displays performance is extremely responsive, employing a unique dynamic compression algorithm. On a typical Wi-Fi network, mouse cursor refreshes are indistinguishable from a wired mouse.
On Mac OS X (and soon on Windows), if your iOS device has a Retina display, you can choose to operate at normal or double resolution. On Lion, you can even enable “HiDPI mode.” HiDPI, a built-in Mac OS X feature that renders UI elements at double resolution, is absolutely stunning on a Retina display. (NOTE: the Retina MacBook Pro does not support HiDPI on external displays.)
Air Display works in both landscape and portrait configurations. Just rotate your screen, and it automatically reconfigures. When you rotate the screen, or disconnect and reconnect, your windows are automatically repositioned appropriately so you dont have to drag them back onto the Air Display screen.
You can connect to Air Display from both Mac and Windows. And because its a universal app, it works on an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch.
Air Display provides a virtual keyboard and mouse input on the iOS device. Air Display supports video-out to your TV or Monitor, either via Apples AirPlay or with an appropriate adapter cable.
Some great uses for Air Display:
• General: Fill your Air Display screen with utility windows like Twitter, Facebook, email, or calendar.
• Graphic design: Make Photoshop and Illustrator usable on your laptop by putting your tool palettes on the iOS screen.
• Music: Use your iOS screen as a wireless control surface for Logic or Pro Tools.
• Programming: Use the extra display area for such auxiliary development tools as Console, Terminal, and the Debugger.
• Business: Move all of your iWork and Office palettes and inspector windows onto Air Display, and let your document fill the screen.
• Share: Use your iOS devices video adapter to share your screen on TVs, monitors and projectors in your boardroom or classroom.
• Amaze your friends by playing Flash animations on an iOS device!
On first launch, Air Display presents easy instructions for downloading and installing the companion Air Display Connect software for your desktop computer.
— COMPATIBILITY —
MAC OS X
To connect to a Mac, Air Display requires 10.6 (Snow Leopard) or later, on an Intel CPU. Both 32-Bit & 64-Bit systems are supported. (NOTE: On Lion & Mountain Lion, third-party video drivers, including Air Display’s, have some issues on these specific 15 and 17 MacBook Pro models: Late 2008 through Mid 2009, and Mid 2010. Please see avatron.com/lion for details and effective workarounds.)
To connect to a Windows PC, Air Display requires Windows XP (32-bit only), or Vista or 7 (32-bit or 64-bit). Windows 7 Starter edition is not supported. (NOTE: Aero and DirectX will be disabled while connected to Air Display and re-enabled upon disconnection.)
Your computer and iOS device must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
I think Air Display is better than the other solutions I've explored.
Currently (5/24/10) there are two other solutions that I am aware of...
This is not a "little" better, it is way better.
This is an app worth of your $10.
Air Display is a pretty great 1.0 release.
Does what it says - makes your iPad show up as an external display on your Mac (they say Windows support is coming). I leave my iPad in a stand underneath my 24" LCD (which is attached to my MacBook Pro) all day, now I can use it as if it were an external monitor.
Don't let the setup steps involved scare you off. You have to install the support software, and reboot, and I had to jump through some hoops to rearrange my screens in Display Settings (since I have three screens, this was a bit tricky), but once it's set up, it works great.
I played some HD video (720p shot on a Canon T1i DSLR) to test. With the video file half on my iPad screen, and half on my regular monitor, Air Display played the video fine, albeit at a slower framerate. The video itself looked great - no loss in visual quality. Windows and apps looks great in Air Display, thanks to the gorgeous iPad IPS screen.
Great app, Avatron - thanks! :-)
While not as speedy as having a hardwired second monitor, this app is AWESOME. I have a 13" Macbook and it essentially doubles my screen. Having a portable second monitor that can travel with you is an incredible asset. Windows maximize on the screen and it is perfect for palette based software like Photoshop and Dreamweaver. I cannot praise this app enough!
Incredibly responsive. Even better than I expected. This app provides so many possibilities. It's hard to believe this is working over a network. Great job!
If you read some of the reviews for iDisplay, no need to worry here. Worked right out of the "box". I wouldn't use it for screens that change display a lot, but great for tool bars, IMs, pallets..perfectly designed - just what I was waiting for
Well done. Very responsive, simple to setup, etc. This is what iDisplay *should* have been (stay clear of that piece of trash, by the way).
Air Display works !!!!!! - well done finally as promised - Well Worth the $$$$!!!
5 Stars, easy setup - touch screen on the ipad supported.
Great Idea - Works perfect and as expected going through Wifi - For work purpose i just put Windows XP on it, I only need to use Windows XP for our Shoretel phone system. It serves perfect for what I need it for. Great idea.
Also nice to be able to actually run around the house and put something on the second screen as flash and move a few objects around. Great work.
I was so worried when I bought it because iDisplay was so laggy. Somehow this app is very fast and the refresh rate is amazing. I think it does this by only sending over the part of the screen that changes. When the entire screen is moving, it's slower but for normal use, it's awesome. 5 stars. Great add-on definitely worth the money.
Air Display is darn awesome! I've had some minor performance issues and every now and then the Mac client can't connect to my iPad, but in general it works great. Best of all, I finally have a reason to keep my iPad in the dock.
I wasn't really expecting this product to work as well as it does, based on reviews of other programs, that claim to do the same thing. The refresh rate on the iPad is really excellent, and makes this a perfect second monitor, especially for on the go projects. I highly recommend it..
Well, i just bought it... playing around for 10 min or less!
So far, it's awesome... very well done!
Air Display is a very solid app. It is smooth and fast. The refresh rate is barely noticeable. Definitely worth the $10. It did lock when I played a flash video on the screen. If they could figure out how to get sound to it it would be 5 stars all the way.
This thing is the most responsive of current solutions but clearly is a version one product. Things it doesn't have:
Input other than single click or drag
Options to lower resolution for optimizing performance.
Don't expect to watch video on this thing, but it's not bad for displaying a folder or iTunes, etc...
In conclusion: wait until version 1.1 before you drop the ten bucks.
This is a solid performer compared to iDisplay. It understands the native resolution of the iPad and does not complicate it by making you tinker with extra settings. You should be up and running in 5-10 minutes (it requires your Mac to restart). The touch screen remains an input device that you can use to drag windows or enter digits in programs like Calculator. However, video and animation will not play back smoothly on the iPad display (it refreshes through wifi).
So much better then a certain other app I wasted $5 on.
This works as I would have expected. Refresh is limited to the wifi speed, congestion and lag. It is as fast as the screen sharing you do in OSx (VNC). So refresh is what I what I expected and definitely acceptable. Would be nice if the USB port was an option for even faster sharing.
The extra display can be turned off, which eliminates the "black whole" in the side of the screen; which also brings the apps from the iPad back to your MAC. Would be nice if the app remembered the last iPad used and if available and then auto connect to it when you turn screen sharing on; but really, it is not that big of a deal.
Maybe support for an iPhone / touch. Small screen, but someone may have a good use for it. I could see using my media serving mac mini sharing a "remote control app" displayed on my iPhone to control it, hmmmmmm.
Great job guys on release 1.0 - worth the money!
The application is stable and great for low refresh apps like iTunes or a Mail client, but you won't be playing WoW on it or anything like that. Easy set up, nice price, solid performance. Will be posting a video review at allyourapple.com today.
I've been using it with my Macbook Pro as a second display and I'm amazed at how responsive the screen updates are. Whilst it doesn't give you full motion video, it is fast enough to watch a movie on the screen without it being painful. Most of time I leave either my mailbox, or my IM clients and itunes controls up, which gives me quick access to them but keeps them off my main screen. As I'm already carrying my Macbook & iPad at the same time it is great to be able to use the iPad as a second display. Looking forward to Windows support too, as my wife will be able to use it with her Dell laptop.
I purchased this app to work as a second monitor for my laptop. It works as needed and the refresh rate is pretty good. Well worth the price!
It also works nice as a third monitor but I will properly never use it as a true third monitor while working. I have not tested out the touch screen capabilities of the iPad since it does not fit my workflow, but I can see where it is needed.
I can't wait to see future improvements.
