ODE is probably the Bentley.
OED is more like a freight train.
Sound like you were looking for unabridged dictionary.
ODE covers modern English and doesnt try to cover archaic usages.
The Shorter Oxford has more archaic words, but not all the usages.
The OED is the best without a doubt, but not available for iOS. Only for subscription on the Web.

Well, it is not the OED (Oxford English Dictionary) which has the most comprehensive linguistic database in the world, but this edition (Oxford Dictionary Of English) reflects the contemporary state of the language. I think what sets Oxford Deluxe apart from from similar apps are the definitions - as clear and accurate as they can possibly be. The Thesaurus is also the best one I have come across, and the integration -seamless. With that said however, I definitely think there should be audio pronounciation for each and every word. Overall very well thought-out app. Update: As I continue to use this magnificent dictionary, my only plea to Enfour is - Please, oh, please make an app for the COMPLETE OED. I would gladly pay $99.99 or more for such app!
 LightnnRod
I squirmed a lot initially, read every description and review of every dictionary. Fifty-five dollars for this one!! No way. So I rationalized and bought the Oxford American Collegiate D&T and liked it a lot. At first. Great interface, easy to use. But soon I found it sadly lacking. Not a lot of words and no two-word terms that I recall. So I did what I should have done in the first place and got the Oxford Deluxe. Now THIS is dictionary-thesaurus! Everything you could want. Includes "Serching Fore Dumies" in the event you're looking up a word to see how to spel it. Seamless interface between dictionary and thesaurus. Great etymology notes. If you love words, buy this now for $55, instead of spending $75 as I did. Truss me.

The king of dictionary apps (at least in terms of price) and you can't be bothered to optimize it for the iPad.

So, if you wanted the best AMERICAN dictionary package (with dictionary and thesaurus in one) you would most certainly look no further than the American Heritage Dictionary and Thesaurus Deluxe from Enfour Inc.The dictionary application reviewed here is a clone of the American Heritage Deluxe package -- with Oxford in the database. The Oxford package presented here exhibits the same quality used in preparation of the American Heritage Deluxe but for the mother of all regional varieties of English -- English spoken in the UK (Oxford is, afterall, a British publishing house). If Oxford English (the gold standard in how English is used worldwide) strikes your fancy, than look no farther than this application and ignore the price. This software is priceless. The price is simply a door ticket. What awaits you behind that door is a world of exploration of the most popular language in the world from the publishers of the most respectable dictionaries in the world -- Oxford.Very little can I say here about the actual dictionary database. It is a complete, one volume MODERN English dictionary that comes with all of the hallmarks of Oxford. The only small matter that concerned me in the beginning is that graphical pronunciation is not given for basic words. Those are words like "begin," "world," "smile" -- essentially all the words that a native speaker of a language should have no problem pronouncing. Luckily, you will still find SPOKEN pronunciation by clicking on the speaker icon -- even for these basic words. Make sure your ringer is NOT switched off on your iPhone so you can hear words pronounced properly. iPod Touch users should not have this as a concern.Where the application truly shines is its seamless integration with Thesaurus. The word switch is instantaneous. You don't have to wait more than half a second to see the word you enter in the dictionary appear in the Thesaurus -- if applies. Not all words really are in the Thesaurus that are in the dictionary. But that is easily understood if one knows anything about Thesauri and how they are structured. This is a lifetime investment and you are sure to not only educate yourself but to entertain yourself in the process.I own both this AND the American Heritage package, and eventhough I spent over a hundred dollars on both, I have absolutely no regrets as I have already learned so many words. No longer do I have to wait to get home to look up a word because it is all right there on my iPhone. Sure, you can use an online (free) dictionary but those are not as 1) full-featured (not all info is there) 2) not as pretty 3) no bookmark capability (unless you bookmark in Safari and then organize into a words bookmark group), you have to be online at all times to look stuff up.Please, don't hesitate -- a perfect gift for any language lover, a college entrant, a high-school student, or anyone who you think would enjoy this on their iPhone.A word of advice about comparing my review to reviews of others for other Enfour dictionary products. Take everything they write with a grain of salt. Click on their other reviews to see if their level of intelligence or lack thereof is reflected in those other reviews. One reviewer for American Heritage dictionary, for example, was pointing out that certain words were not in the dictionary. The example given was "béarnaise" as in "béarnaise sauce." I looked up the word in all of the dictionaries I could -- including many, many unabridged ones and couldn't find it -- all because the reviewer's spelling wasn't even close to how the word is actually spelled. A dictionary can only work for us if we actually put in the right spelling or at least a close version. One wish I have for Enfour dictionaries is if we could have integrated Dictionary and Thesaurus bookmark bank (so we don't have two separate lists in each side of the application). Also, if we could export our word lists to email, that would be fantastic as well.

I purchased the AHD4 by Enfour as a tide-over until a good version of the complete OED came out for the iPhone. I remember thinking that if the OED people had any sense, they would get Enfour to do the complete version on this platform. Simply stands head-and-shoulders over the other dictionary options on the app store, especially the other versions of the OED (Paragon, Mobile Systems, Prelude Mobile, etc.). The thesaurus is an unexpected, but not unwelcome bonus (especially the excellent WordFinder feature). Transition between the dictionary and thesaurus is nigh-seamless.The only things I would ask for is some font control options for the supplmentary material, and a way to go back to the prior WordFinder page after tapping a definition and viewing it in the dictionary. As someone who owns a paper version of the complete OED (two volume facsmille edition, 4 pages per side with magnifying glass), it's amazing to have the best lexical resource for the English language in my pocket. Yes, it's expensive, but this is the definitive dictionary app on the iPhone, and that's not something I expect will change any time soon.
 Dgor227
I bought this thinking I was going to own something close to the full Oxford Dictionary. What I got was concise, to a fault. It is not much better than Dictionary.com, which is a heck of a lot cheaper. I was really looking forward to owning a dictionary so thorough as to deserve the name "Oxford", but this version is SO concise and abbreviated, that I would stick with the less expensive and just as thorough other ones.

If you want a basic dictionary - there are many cheap or free alternatives. I was looking for a few weeks for something like this, but could not find it right away. I was considering buying The American Heritage dictionary (also by Enfour) and actually stumbled upon this app. In my opinion, if you want the best content Oxford is the way to go. This version is unabridged and includes a thesaurus. The books cost much more than this app - and you can keep this one in your pocket. Something that I wanted to point out to people who are considering this: Obviously the content is amazing, but on the software front Enfour really does an amazing job. It feels native - you can switch from thesaurus to dictionary very quickly and it is very stable. When I first opened it I thought the background was ugly when looking at a list of words. The settings have an option to turn it off, so I did. When it was a plain white background I decided it was perfect. As stated earlier, Enfour also make an American Heritage dictionary that is very well respected and well reviewed - and that version costs less, but for me Oxford Deluxe was the way to go. I say if you're looking for a great dictionary app on your iPhone, check out their products first. Highly recommended.
 EvenStephen2000
I have a lot of dictionary apps and this one is, by far the best. The content and user interface combine to make this an extremely navigable application to use and actually enjoy. You can find a lot of other dictionary options for your iPhone, and a lot of them are really good. But if you really want the best all around dictionary and thesaurus, this is worth the $60. You can spend maybe $10 - $20 less and get a separate app for each but what you miss is the value of not having to change apps, thereby losing your place and getting frustrated in the process. In addition, having everything together helps with the overall learning process because I found that I was able to easily switch back and forth for comparisons and more in-depth study. The sound modules are great and easy to hear, as well. Highly recommended.
 neeg-the-black-
this is the same wonderful interface as the American Heritage app, but with Oxford content & seamless switching between dictionary & thesaurus lookup. after spending several hundred dollars on iPhone dictionaries, this seems to be the best, unless one prefers AH's content somehow. this app & AH both lack a word of the day but, with the thesaurus mode, browsing enables veracious vocabulary expansion. 5 stars, rounding up.
 TNTz9
I'm a writer, and any writer must have the ODE. I have only one complaint about this app: it's not expansive enough. I have a hardcopy set of ODE books that I have to reference constantly. This iPhone app does not have enough explanation and history of words. I don't care how big they make the iPhone app, so they should expand it much, much more. Use a gig--who cares? When a person needs the ODE, they need the full ODE, not a stripped down version.
 hdaa
This is a great application. Succinct yet complete.Would really like one more feature, the ability to e-mail a definition quickly and easily.
 LoneOak137
I really love this dictionary, although I was initial put off by description using the phrase "the big one" when, in fact that is misleading as this is not the multiple-volume dictionary to which that illudes. However, I am extremely pleased. There is far more audio than I expected, with nearly everything I have needed to look up having it. I do really think one should be able to jump back and forth from dict to thesaurus and not have to first return to a search screen. Make the button available on the definition page! The one reason I kept another dictionary is I want a word of the day which this does not provide. My only other wish is that it did not try to be the printed version. In other words, I don't need to see a page from the hard copy. I prefer that all content be in a native format as opposed to trying to be a printed book.

If someone wants great dictionaries that have been optimized for the iPad try Collins and Ultralingua (at least for Spanish).
 Lcwizard
I am very disapointed. This dictionary does not recognize some fairly common words. A free dictionary I downloaded was a much better option. For the asking price they should be ashamed. Plus the definitions are weak and limited. I repeat how disappointed I am and upset over the amount of money I could have spent on something else.
 泥石流61
I should say this dictionary is one of the best apps in app store! Really great.非常不错,继续努力!

This is really a terrificly nice one, I love it and it had become my favorite learning tool. But, I just want to know how to use one of its features, that is, searching from other applications. If I come across a new word when reading ebooks, can I search for the meaning of it by ODE without quit my ebook application? Answers are welcome.
 Loop and Dot
All in all I would call this first rate. Yes, it's a lot of money, but there's nothing else like it and I wouldn't want to be without it.
