Smart Recorder is the ultimate time based note taking tool for the iPhone or iPad. It allows the typing of textual notes as time based tags while recording. During playback, you can change the speed to quickly skim through less interesting pieces of a meeting. After you are done, you can use Box.net to archive your session or transfer it to another device.
•Time based tags allow you to quickly jump back to important portions of a recording.
•Take pictures while recording on the iPhone. The pictures are stamped with the time in the recording at which they were taken.
•If you turn the phone upside down to get better reception for the microphone, then screen will rotate.
•Auto pause suspends recording when there is no sound. Recording starts again when talking resumes—perfect for conference room meetings.
•Multi speed playback allows you to skim uninteresting conversations quickly.
•A forward arrow skips 30 seconds of the recording.
•A back button allows you to repeat the last 30 seconds of the recording.
•You can append to existing recordings.
•You can record while the phone is in sleep mode.
•A slider allows you to quickly navigate to any part of a long recording.
•You can even tap on the recording time and enter a numeric time at which you want to playback from.
•Smart Recorder provides five methods to transfer sessions back to your computer. First, there is WiFi sync. Your iPhone becomes an HTTP server and you simply point your web browser to the address given by your phone and save the recordings (and page with your tags) using the browser. Second, Smart Recorder supports SyncDocs. If you download and install SyncDocs, then you can use it to save all the files related to your session. Third, you can upload the pictures to Box.net. If you have never used Box.net, Smart Recorder can set you up with a free account. This account will allow uploading of recordings of 25MB (or almost 5 minutes). If you upgrade your Box.net account, then you can upload recordings of up to 1GB or over three hours. Fourth, you can upload to Dropbox. Finally, you can email your recordings.
•For any export method, Smart Recorder converts files to a desired format (WAV,AAC,CAF,...) and a desired sampling rate (8000,22050,44100).
Smart recorder provides a rich set of system settings to control its behavior:
•There is a setting that controls the number of seconds the forward and back buttons move you if 30 seconds is not appropriate.
•The sampling rate can be set anywhere between 8000-44,100Hz. A lower sampling rate saves disk space while a higher rate gives better audio quality.
•You can set the noise (or quietness) threshold at which auto pause activates.
•There are many other settings as well. See the program’s help section for more details.
Note that the iPod Touch (2nd Generation) requires an external microphone.

I originally bought this for my iPhone nearly a year ago. Experienced occasional version 1 glitches that were fixed early on. It has since become a stable tool for recording meetings or conversations, permitting you to tag-with-a-click (or with notes) those segments you know you will need to return to. A couple of newer iPad apps seem to also offer synchronized note-taking and recording. Smart Recorder's additional recording/playback features make it worth special consideration... adjustable tag cueing leads, adjustable playback speeds and other marks of a mature professional product. Finally, I appreciate this developer electing to make Smart Recorder a universal app, a decision that's not being made too often these days!

I really like this app. The recording on it is very clear. It is very easy to use. I also like the fact it has a fast forward and tags. I would just like to add a writing piece where I can use my finger or stylus. Other than that, I like it

This is a good, basic app that does exactly what it promises. With one exception: although the documentation refers to the tag button as in the "upper right," it and all the other action buttons are at the bottom. That means they get hidden by the keyboard, and that makes taking notes and tagging a longer interview or lecture quite frustrating!

I gave this a try in a meeting today on my iPad. In general I found it to be very useable, and I ended up with a very useful annotated recording, even of the people who were on a speakerphone. The sound quality was very good, it was easy to use, and gave me no problems during the meting. I have a few minor complaints related to the interface, but none of the things that bothered me prevented me from getting a usable, tagged recording of the meeting. Several of the items below are really feature suggestions more than complaints, but they relate to usability concerns I had, so I'll leave them here as part of my impression. The app supports a variety of sync options, which is excellent. I would like to see support for 'Bump' style sharing of recordings. I need to be able to disable the screen lock. I use a short timeout and a lock code on my iPad, and by the time I wake the screen, swipe the slider and enter the code, my tag on the audio is way late. I found that while I am recording and adding tags the keyboard is up all the time. This is an issue because it covers the button bar at the bottom of the screen, forcing me to first hide the keyboard before I can use the buttons there. The help screen is not available when recording. This would save some navigation as I explore the app. The help references a pause button which I have not found yet. I seem to have to stop and then append. Tags each have the full time, but I would like to see the offset from the recording start time. Every new tag has a default text of 'tag' that I have to delete before I enter text. This slows down tag entry, which needs to be as fast as possible, as I am trying to pay attention to the meeting. To delete a tag I have to hide the keyboard, click the trash icon, click the delete icon on a tag, then click the delete button. This is too many steps. Needs a delete icon at right edge of tag which shows the delete confirmation button. I would like to be able to enter the tag names in an outline structure, so it would be easier to see the structure of the meeting topics. I can kind of do this manually, but a little more support for bullets of something to make the typing faster would be useful. The vertical size of the tags is larger than necessary, I'd like to be able to see more tags, and possibly be able to collapse outline groups. When I add a tag I usually want it to refer to a point a few moments prior to when I hit the button. As it is, when I review the meeting most of my tags are a few seconds too late, which is annoying. I would like to have a slowly scrolling graph of the last ten seconds of sound level (perhaps in a vertical format on the splitter bar) that I could click to add a new tag. Constantly typing everything is distracting, I would like to have a panel with some labels that I define (and maybe a couple of generic attention icons) that I could touch to annotate the selected tag. Update, downgrade from 4 to 2 stars. After recording a number of meetings I have discovered that often my recording is truncated after about a minute. I suspect that once the iPad screen locks it stops recording sound, though it appears to continue. Meetings where I spent the entire duration keeping the screen active were recorded. I can't delete audio files. Otherwise, useful app. Would prefer if the screen did not flip when turned about -- it moves the record/play button out of reach. An option to turn this off would be nice.

Recorded a 2 hour meeting today. App worked perfectly, audio is good, exported with no problems, and was able to convert so I could work with the audio files in 3rd party programs (Adobe Soundbooth). Really liked the fact that when I received a SMS message, the recording didn't stop. Again great app.
