At the bottom of this page, there’s a “File sharing” section – just select OPlayer HD in the list, and add files from there. Note that you don’t have to sync your iPhone or iPad to iTunes to add movies. Just drop files in the “File sharing” tab, and they’ll be uploaded immediately. You can even use a friend’s iTunes to add videos to your own iPhone. Also, adding files over WiFi is supported. Indeed, WiFi is significantly slower than USB, and ruins the battery life.
✔ What kind of streams does OPlayer HD play?
OPlayer HD is able to play RTSP/MMS/FTP/SAMBA streams, If you want to use OPlayer HD to open the streaming from your website, add oplayer: prefix in the URL.

If you want to watch an attachment in OPlayer HD(from Mail for example), just do a long press on the attachment. A menu will pop-up that will let you pick OPlayer HD as a player.
✔ iTunes won’t see the files under OPlayer HD?
You need to enable backup in the settings page to see files in iTunes.
✔ Why HD MKV movies don’t play smoothly?
Currently, only iPad 2 supports 720p MKV file, that’s to be expected. The other iDevices have limited computing power, and cannot handle the complex task of decoding HD movies in real time.
✔ The audio and the video is not in sync?
That is because the CPU is not power enough to do video decoding, you can try to enable Skip Frame in the file detail page.
✔ Is there a TV-out support?
Yep, but TV-out function only supported by iPod gen4, iPhone4, iPhone4S and iPad 1/2.

I have been looking for an app to play .avi files without first having to convert them to mp4. This is the first app that I have found that can do the job. Don't underestimate the challenge - I imagine that the app has to do the conversion on the fly in software without any hardware acceleration - this is hard to do given the limited cpu and ram. Given this challenge, this app does an admirable job. it is not perfect (yet!), but it is a good first pass. The developer seems to be updating the app, fixing bugs, and adding features. If you want to be able to play a wide range of video formats on your ipad, then it is worthwhile spending the $5 to support this app and its developer.
Guys and gals, this app really does work. All you have to do to make most of your avi files work properly is to go into the Settings of the app and make sure that Skip Frame is set to OFF. In this case, there will be no stuttering and jumping. My avi files play smoothly - just like on my computer. Also, it is great that you can download avi files straight from the web from inside the app or copy them from computer via iTunes.
I am now saying goodbye to Air Video which never worked great for me.
Take my review seriously -- look at my other reviews and take a note that I rate apps fairly.
UPDATE: You guys who are giving this app bad reviews are acting as if there are many apps that compete in this field.
The fact that this is the ONLY app in the whole store that can excellently play the preferred internet conversion file which is .avi should NOT be underestimated. Please be realistic in your reviews so that others know exactly what this app does.
Outstanding application. Haven't tried avi yet. But be assured this is a first rate quality app.
Well worth the money.
Testing time: 2 weeks with many various different video file types and resolutions/quality.
Problem with the Apple’s own excellent & fast video player for iPad is that it only plays certain formats. Viewing small AVI & WMV files in my emails were a big issue (unless your iPad is, well you know). OPlayer, fixes this issue as I can check my email, download, and play on OPlayer without much effort or the need to turn on my computer.
The unfortunate part about OPlayer is that its own video player needs a lot of work. For any file types other than mov/mp4, audio and video are CONSTANTLY out of sync, no matter what setting it’s on (skip frame on/off, skip loop filter, etc)…sadly it’s out of sync even for really low resolution videos. I really have to question those reviews stating AVI files play well. It doesn’t work well for my iPad, nor my brother’s.
Mov/mp4 files tend to play a lot better though, but when you get into mid-higher resolutions you’ll see the video pausing sometimes and audio out of sync. . The good thing about this is that there is an option to use the Quicktime plugin for mov & mp4s, so you’re basically using Apple’s own player to play the files you download, and as you would expect, Apple’s Quicktime player plays these files beautifully without a hitch, even the high quality downloads.
What makes this app shine is the ability to download files using the web browser in the app or transferring files with wifi from your Mac/PC. Of course because of the poor video playback of Oplayers own video playback, I mostly try to stick to downloading mov & MP4 videos and play them with the QuickTime plugin on in the settings. This is a great thing since I don’t need to turn on my laptop to transfer video files to play. For instance, yesterday I downloaded the high def MOV file of the E3 2010 Microsoft Xbox 360 Conference (1.4 gig video file) with the web browser within OPlayer…once it finished downloading, quickly left and took it on a trip with me to watch…then deleted it when I was done. Also I've made a couple of folders and put some of my favorite short videos and can delete whenever on the iPad. Very nice.
Basically this app is great for downloading mov & MP4 videos within an iPad app, managing files (sorting, renaming, deleting, making new folders), and playing them using the QuickTime plugin, other than that...AVI, WMV, and other video formats have poor video playback with out of sync audio and video, even with low resolution videos...which is crappy to say the least.
Other things, other than improving the video player, which would be great to see in the next updates:
*1. Web browser saving the last place you visited. Exit out of the browser accidently or just want to check out the downloads, go back to it, and the page is blank. It really should put you back where you last left off at…especially annoying when you’re browsing pages and pages of video files and trying to go back to where you left off at.
*2. With QuickTime plugin turned on, I can’t view other files like the WMV & AVI files I get from my email. I have to constantly go to the settings and turn off QuickTime, then turn it back on to play mov & MP4 videos. Would be nice if OPlayer automatically played unsupported QuickTime video files in it’s own player if QuickTime is turned on.
2.5 / 5 stars
Let me tell you, this app in its current form is unusable, however it has major promise. It is already light years ahead of Yxplayer and needs only a little more tweaking to get it to work perfectly. Audio and video stutter, if that can be fixed you got yourself a vlc replacement for the IPAD. Authors please continue to tweak this cuz I really want it to work!!!!
I have tried to play 5 files. Unfortunately one only played without any trouble (even with "switch off the skip frame").
Don't waste your money.
This app just doesn't do anything. When you try playing video using web browser, it wont play even HTML 5 videos. You cant download any file from FTP client. It wont stream audio from anywhere.
Description is just a bunch of lies.
really bad experience when I use this software. the audio always not sync with video and sometimes no voice. the speed of vidoe play also not smooth than iphone video. i hope you can imporve and release fix asap.
This app is useless. I have tried playing everything from divx, mkv, mp4 seems, like nothing works. The videos are totally unwatchable due to the poor performance, laggy video not sync with the audio, glitches, bugs. The interface is so ugly, no way to organize videos. Apple needs to pull this crap out from the app store. Shame on you apple for approving this software. It's garbage and waste of money!
Take your $4.99 and set it on fire, throw it out the window, etc. You will benefit more from it than from buying this app. I thought this was going to be the answer to having to convert video files and also being able to watch actual HD and how sorely wrong I was. I loaded an mkv file that the player not only played slow but also with out of sync audio! At first I thought it may have been the file so I tried it out on my computer with no problems. So I loaded an avi to find the same problem stuttering/slow video with out of sync audio. Fortunately I had converted and put the video file in my videos and played with no problem. What this app proposes is a dream what it delivers is absolute CRAP! I can only hope that the developers are paying attention and optimize this app so that it actually functions as advertised. Do not waste your money here!
When playing rmvb files, the sound and video often don't sync. My wife also noticed losing sound completely after awhile. This app needs serious updating to work out the kinks. Until then, only a one-star rating.
The app does what it says it should, which is to open and play MKV and other containers not supported by Apple. Unfortunately, it does this through a poor interface and with miserable performance. The video engine is definitely not taking advantage of the H.264 acceleration in the iPad, since 720p content is unwatchable which would otherwise play fine if remuxed to mp4 and played through the built in video app. This app is not ready for prime time - it's barely at a beta stage.
This app. Does not play movies where you left off. If you spend your money on this app be prepared to search for where you left off every time you have to close out the program. It may be a good app once this problem is fixed. But until they announce the movie will play where you left off I would steer clear of this app.
Really great app, can't believe that I've missed it.
Turn off in settings that two switches and video are smooth and playing great.
No need to convert sd avi's any more.
One out of 4 files tested worked... the only one that worked was a file already compatible with iTunes. Save yourself grief. Compatible with files listed... is misleading. Issues are, no sound, choppy images, sound not synced with image and it freezes. Just convert the file for iTunes and avoid this program. Handbrake program works flawlessly.
SEE ADDED NOTE BELOW:
Trying to download .wmv files directly using the provided interface gives erratic results and sometimes crashes the app. The files I tried play sound first, then video, or no sound at all. I purchased this app specifically to be able to play .wmv files on my iPad when I encounter them linked in a web page, so as not to have to switch to a desktop computer. It fails.
Attempts to engage the authors have been unproductive. There seems to be a serious language barrier, at the least. When I attempted to provide them a link to a sample file for them to test against, it was received with "maybe their government was blocking it."
I consider this app a waste of money. Hopefully someone else will come out with an adequate solution for playing these files on the iPad.
ADDED NOTE: changing the skip and/or loop settings has no effect for me. The audio still plays first, followed by the video, followed by a crash to desktop. Sorry, this app is garbage.
This application is what we waited for,,,, smooth playing for .avi files!! no need to convert your files after downloading,, but you need to turn off the skip frame option....you also can play WMV attachment which is a plus!
I bought this apps in hopes of being able to watch avi and wmv files flawlessly on my iPad. Unforunately, this app makes the video and audio out of sync no matter what setting combination I use. Hopefully there will be an update for this major problem in the future, but for right now, I would recommend not buying this app until this problem is fixed.
Been looking for a video player that plays AVI on my iPad, and this does the job. The video isn't fluid though, as if it has a lower frame rate than if played on my computer, so it's a little choppy like a bad stream? But the audio and video syncs fine, and there's no lag, so the fluidity doesn't really bother me. But it would be nice if they fixed this in future updates :)
