In my humble opinion, Bridge Baron is the best bridge program in the computer world (and I've tried a lot of them). That said, this app version falls short in a few ways.
I thought that I had exhausted the number of hands provided within a couple of hours of play, when I found myself replaying some of the same hands. I was wrong, there are goo-gobs (billions) of hands built in, but the randomizer doesn't seem very efficient.
One feature that makes the full-fledged Bridge Baron computer program especially unique and powerful is it's ability to allow you to describe your play preferences and conventions as well as many other options. This App falls short on the settings it allows you to control.
The Scoring and Review screens, though well designed, don't seem to make use of the space available. Print is very tiny.
In all, the logistics of play are extremely well done, but I'm disappointed in how much was left out of this version.
The support team at Great Games got back to me to discuss my concerns (Kudos to them!) and guided me toward work-arounds for most of what I found lacking. They said that upgrades were in the works to address all of these issues.
I'll gladly play the existing program (it is responsive & comprehensive) while awaiting the finishing touches.
but plays a good hand of bridge.
Like another reviewer, actual display of the scoring is buggy, but otherwise the game play, hints and bid interpretation is great.
I was hopeful this would be the good version, but East/West scores STILL somtimes fail to appear in rubber mode. It's my favorite game, but the continuing bugs are disappointing.
That seems to break all the rules of weak two's. And what about signaling....there's no way to configure how to signal for upside down...what about Bergen raises...needs some updates.
I bought the game after seeing high rating by somebody and played it everyday for a few months. Overall, I'm quite disappointed. Both bidding and playing have a lot to improve. Expense does not match the quality. Waiting for a much better next version before recommending to others.
I had high expectations of this app, but held off buying it for a long time in the hope that they'd reduce the price. But finally I figured that they must use the hefty price to provide good support, right? Dead wrong!
I'm a little mystified by all this. So many good reviews, but the app was basically unusable to me. I might have tolerated some teething problems if they could fix them, and show good customer support, but I've been given the run around now for almost a week, and they twice promised and failed to call me. This is what your $20 buys you.
Here are some of the actual text of my complaints to them.
Very frustrating. All it does is crash or freeze. I was trying to use the tournaments feature. I got the login screen, and clicked to create login. Freeze then crash. Tried again, this time was able to fill in information. Get back to app, click on tournaments. Freeze then crash. Get back in, and I get to the page where you choose Get tournaments. Freeze then crash. Well, you've got the picture I hope.
Already, more problems. In settings page, no matter what I click on, the page stays the same, except if I click on NS Convention Card (or EW), it goes to convention card selection page, but when I change it, it stays the same when return to settings page. I click on Close, nothing happens. I click on Display/Speed, that button turns darker blue as if selected, but it still shows the play options.
Okay, finally playing a game. In the middle of hand. I play from dummy, and the card just disappears. What I see now are 3 cards in dummy, 4 in my hand, nothing on the playing surface. Very irritating that I accidentally mis-hit something on the surface, and the game is lost all of a sudden. Also the cards are too small. How come Omar Shariff can get this right, but you can't?
Hi, you said you'd call me today, and you didn't. This is the 2nd time this has happened. Given the scale of things that don't work on the app, and the wretched customer service, and given the ridiculous price for which you'd expect much better, I've already begun the process to cancel the credit-card charge.
I've posted the full text of the customer service ticket online, but I doubt Apple would let me give that URL in a review.
We are thankful for your support. iBridgeBaron is the most comprehensive Bridge game available on any mobile device. To make it even better please email us your suggestions and complains.
There is some buzz on line that the bidding is more interesting or advanced but who could tell? The game is unusable - the interface is horrible. The complaints I saw on line were about bugs and crashing - i didn't get that far. Playing as it was designed and intended, the game is a mess. I am back to the Omar Sharif game, which is easy to use, easy to analyze hands, easy to review bids and plays... Bridge Baron is too expensive to be so unusable.
When there's a tie in duplicate, it would be better for my ego, to rank me on top of the ties rather than on the bottom of the ties :-)
I'm only a beginner (just beginning to understand a couple of conventions). While this app has certainly helped me, it overbids sufficiently often that I can't really depend on it to learn technique. I often manage to make it go down by one trick, even though I'm in "advanced" mode.
Update 10-3-10. Still One Star!!
I've now been playing this game off and on for 8 months and want to update my previous review.
First, the disregard for rules continues to baffle me. It is not possible to trust partner's bidding. My partner (North) has just bid two hands that amaze: bidding twice and putting the contract in 3NT with 4 points!! And by first opening and then jumping to 6 NT over my 3 NT bid with 11 points, even distribution, an unprotected suit, NO aces, and without asking for aces. Recently I bid 4 Clubs after partner opened 1 NT and partner responded 6 NT. Obviously we went down doubled all three times. On other occasions my partner unexpectedly passes with a very competitive hand. The overall reaction on my part is to become very conservative and cautious.
Second, opposition continues to play as though they can see each other's cards. This occurs even when there is no way for them to know from the bidding or previous play what cards the declarer is holding.
These two examples make the game so frustrating I simply quit playing. Another irritation occurs when I tell it to skip a deal and it invariably goes back several deals and repeats them.
On the upside, their updates have resulted in fewer crashes and improved scoring. And the interpretation option is very nice.
However, the bottom line remains that a $20 price tag is at least $18 too high. Like many other reviewers, these frustrations send me running to Omar Shariff quite often.
Why can't someone design a good bridge app for the iPhone? We know it is possible based upon some very good computer programs. I keep hoping.
Original review: I am very disappointed in this game. I love bridge and was very excited by this app.
It freezes up every 7-8 hands. The same hand is frequently dealt (2 million hands???). The opponents play perfectly, always making the correct finesse (when there's a choice). Sometimes it permits you to replay a hand but not always.
For standard American it uses several conventions other than the standard ones, altho' you can ask for a hint if you recognize that the bid is atypical.
Certainly not worth $20. Stick with the free version until the bugs are fixed or another vendor puts up another app.
Fun...but after playing one hand a message appears saying that Bridge Baron is running low on resources. I can, therefore, play only one hand at a time .
Lot of functionality improvements, but a big downstep in graphics.
1. Bidding buttons have huge and different style font, so the bidding area is overhelming
2. Colors are not nice
3. It shoud be 'NT' not 'nt' for No Trump.
Still the best iPhone app, but needs matching graphics.
Generally I like the new look and I think it is a great app.
Agree that should be "NT" not "nt" - should be an easy fix.
I could not access the detailed system information from the "i" button (I just get a blank screen) - please fix this.
Also, maybe I'm missing something but the 'Table' tab does not appear to show vulnerability and didn't in previous version - if I am correct in this it would be helpful to have this information on the table.
Seems it took up a lot of memory when it worked, message says memory low, close other programs. At present time program is locked at the end of a tournament and won't restart. Hope this will be fixed. Still 3 stars because they seem to be trying.
Please allow 'score' after "quick score!"
Wow - it's really fast now, and has more visible buttons.
This is good improvement over ver 1.0. However, this version still crashes. I had problem in tournament as well as trying to load game when my hands were screwed up and for some reason it went to tournament mode even if I didn't play one. Please fix it.
