This is a bug-fix release to resolve various freezes and crashes.

Description

★ Detailed street-level mapping of England, Scotland and Wales using Ordnance Survey® data. ★ 3D mode ideal for mountains. ★ 1:250,000 road maps built in to the app. ★ Free detailed 1:25,000 and 1:10,000 maps downloaded and stored for off-line use. ★ Contour lines and hill shading. ★ Footpaths from OpenStreetMap.org. ★ Off-line place, street name and postcode search. ★ Works on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.
Since April 2010, Britains national mapping agency Ordnance Survey has released a large amount of free map data. UK Map makes much of that data available in a single app. It includes 1:1M MiniScale® and 1:250k road maps, which are built into the app, and 1:25k district maps and 1:10k street maps for the entire country which you can download in 5km by 5km tiles. Unlike other Ordnance Survey apps, these downloads are entirely free of charge - the only cost is the initial purchase of the app.
New in version 2.0, the app now has a 3D mode that lets you view the terrain from any viewpoint - its great for visualising hills and mountains.
In comparison with other map apps, this app shows much more detail of individual buildings at the street level.
Note that Ordnance Survey have not released any of their Landranger® or Explorer® map data as part of this free scheme, so those maps are not included in the app. However the apps 1:25k maps are suitable for countryside use; they are comparable to Landranger, since they dont show field boundaries and a few other details. They do show water features and woodland, contour lines and hill shading, and now also footpaths.
Note that because the footpaths are derived from volunteer-collected data from OpenStreetMap.org, the coverage is not yet as complete as the other map data.
The app also includes a searchable gazetteer containing over 250,000 place names, 850,000 street names and 1.7 million post codes. All of this data is built in to the app, so this search also works when there is no network connection.
The app also supports the compass (iPhone 3GS, 4, and iPad only) and GPS (iPhone and some iPads only), and can display your position and altitude.
After installing the app, touch the ? button to view the instructions including how to download detailed maps and how to move around in 3D mode.
UK Map is compatible with the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. However the 3D mode is not available on the iPhone 3G or the 2nd generation (2008) iPod touch.
Unfortunately Northern Ireland is not included. The Isle of Man is included only at road-atlas scales.

With the fixed version of the ap released today, all I can say is that UK Map is without equal and I wish I could give it 6 stars! The program is rock solid, the three levels of map detail are spot on and the new shaded topography and compass options make for a very appealing map experience. I only wish I had something like this for the US! It doesn't do routing - it does maps and it does them very well. The developer is extremely responsive and concerned. I highly recommend this program.

I like the U.S. but travel to the U.K. from time to time and have always liked the maps there. Navigation in England is much more a challenge than in the midwest U.S. Anyway, this is one of the first apps I bought on my iPad 3G and it has been excellent! There were some tech issues leading up to the UK iPad release but the developer was very responsive and got them fixed. What I adore about this app is that there is no delay while maps download. The built-in Maps on the iPad is really good, but it does rely on an active data link for the images. UK Maps has them all on the local machine, and you can download and store additional street-level detail for selected areas. I am working out a five week trip for my daughter this summer and this mapping is very useful for that. I would also note that last year I was over and had a Garmin GPS unit with me. This worked very well in getting me right to my next destination but at the cost of losing perspective about what was around me as I went, as I hadn't pored over maps picking the routes ahead of time. This UK Maps app would restore that perspective, it's a pity the iPad wasn't out last year! Although not by this developer, the Mini A-Z Map of London is also a good implementation of a machine-resident map. Like the UK Maps, it will show you your position using the 3G's GPS when it can see the satellites.

I took a chance with this app, downloading it the day before a two week driving vacation in Scotland. Now, having just returned, I want to give this app the highest possible ratings for its quality and usefulness! It really works and doesn't need any online connection - we only rarely found wifi we could use and never turned on data roaming. (I used both the iPad and iPhone versions concurrently.) Downloading the detailed maps is easy and really free. The maps seem to be complete and up to date - new highways were shown correctly and we never encountered a single anachronism. I initially got the maps I thought I needed before the trip and then updated whenever I entered a new part of Scotland and had local wifi. You simply draw the region for which you want details and the app gets the map squares it needs. Scrolling and pinch/zooming was completely natural. The on-screen legend continuously shows the current scale - why doesn't Google maps do this!? The optional cross hairs shows your currently viewed location in your choice of coordinates (we used degrees and decimal minutes). We stopped using our paper maps on the first day because it was so much easier to navigate and plan using this app. It was especially valuable in low light situations where we could read the iPad screen easily. Just having the maps would be enough, but the "locate where you are" feature helped us when we got lost - hint: it doesn't work if you have Airplane Mode turned on (ie, it doesn't work if you've disabled GPS). Finally, to complete the picture of this app's wonderful utility is the gazetteer - you can search for almost everything (including street names in large cities) and it will find it in the map and show you were it is. Wow - we used this app for hours a day every day for our entire trip. We strongly recommend this to anyone driving, biking, or hiking through the UK.

Just returned from a two week driving trip through Yorkshire, the Lake District and North Wales and cannot say enough good things about this app. I had my Nuvi GPS also but had no need for it with UK Map on the iPad. I was always pinpointed on the map and every road no matter how narrow or rural was shown. Just remember to download the higher resolution map blocks for areas where you will traveling with an Internet connection before going and it will be effortless. Sorry Nuvi but your travel days are over.

So much offline for England and ScotlandEven the gazetteer shows monuments, parks, forests, waterways, ferries and more. When you want a local map, download it online by pressing a tile or tiles. Bigger locations have many tiles and take longer to download. No required GPS ever.

A bit overpriced for what you getReasonable program but has its limits. My main use would be for offline mapping with no internet support so I wanted a program with nice map/waypoint downloading capabilities. Map downloads limited to the newer UK Ordinance Survey maps. These maps do not have as much detail as do the older maps, particularly in regard to old megalithic sites (the main reason I bought the program). Downloading map areas works quite well. However, the 25K and 10K scale maps dont seem to be a lot different in the information they contain, just more pixels. No option to input user defined waypoints. Pricey for what you get.

This was a perfect resource as it not only showed us where we were going but also surrounding points of interest. We were also able to use it on hikes and the downloaded Ordinance maps was great in detail. Would recommend to anyone with iPad going to the UK.
