UPDATE V. 2.7: Incredibly, after keeping loyal users waiting for THREE MONTHS, the developer still has not fixed the problem of program crash on delete file with this latest release. At this point, a flagrantly unethical abdication of responsibilities. I'm a devoted WriteRoom for OS X fan and user, and purchased this app as soon as I saw it. Turns out to have been a mistake. The app crashes consistently after deleting a file and upon shake/undo. I've tried reinstalling numerous times, changing settings, etc. but nothing works. According to posts in the Hogbay support forum, Jesse Grossjean, the developer, is aware of these serious stability issues but is postponing a fix probably—apparently indefinitely—to tend to other projects. Purchasers should be aware that they're buying a productivity app that is seriously buggy, and was prematurely released by a developer who does not appear to be in any hurry to put things right. A disappointing performance so far on all counts--especially since Jesse showed a commitment to significantly higher standards in bringing out the OS X version of Writeroom. Would like to see him take the right path here and make fixing this very broken app a priority. Finally issuing an update that dies nothing but expose iOS4 users to now long documented issues that render the app unusable is inexcusable.

I don't get it. Dev updates app to ios4 but didn't fix anything. Still can't enter full screen mode, which is pretty much all this app does.

This app used to be great, one of my faves! But now it's been running really slow, it doesn't sync, and crashes often. I don't know if it's the iPod or just a bad update. I've heard that the creator has abandoned it for other stuff, I sure hope not or I am going to be pissed, and this four star review will be damn generous compared to what I'll be saying about him. Dude, I spent $5 on this thing, I expect my moneys worth.

This app has worked as advertised from the start. I needed a text editor that would sync to my Mac and WriteRoom has fit the bill perfectly. Most important to me is the support that I've gotten from the developer. WriteRoom hasn't caused me any trouble but I needed some help with TaskPaper. Jesse has always gotten back to me in a timely manner and with helpful information. Solid app & helpful developer. Win.

Used to work great. Now it stalls when copy and pasting and editing is very slow. Haven't got a good sync either. I have one other app that does this. Don't know if it is iPhone 4 causing this.

Well, I don't know what to say. This is an excellent app in some respects: - It does offer password lock to access the app, but files are unencrypted - It does offer Wifi sync, which is great if you do not want your files to go to some unknown companies computer. But: - As of iOS4, editing has become glacially slow. Something is really wrong in that the keyboard delay is huge. Not sure what is wrong here. - Shake to undo crashes the app - I cannot seem to find the full screen mode. - All the files are unencrypted on the device. Oh, sure, no one encrypts the files, but I am looking for an app that does. It is trivially easy to bypass the iphone lock and back up the device unencrypted. We need some app that offers file encryption.

Title says it all. Dev openly saying this app is no longer a priority for him on his website. He evens quotes (and agrees with) a negative App Store review that takes him to task for ignoring all of us that paid $5.00 for abandon-ware. Ever seen that before? The dev himself is bagging on this app! 'Nuff said - don't buy this app. Period.

I love WriteRoom and use it on OSX, an iPod Touch, and an iPad. The experience is terrific on OSX, very good on the iPod, and pretty poor on the iPad. That said, I think we ought to give Jesse at Hog Bay a pass on this. If you read his blog, he is working hard on a huge update to the product which with a designed-for-iPad interface and (awesome!) sync support via DropBox. This release is an interim and fixes bugs. If you already use WriteRoom, this is a patch release. One more note: if you are interested in WriteRoom, or if you use it on OSX but not on iOS, now is a good time to buy. Jesse also wrote that the new version will be a universal release (work on iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad) and cost $9.99. The current cost is $4.99. The upgrade will be free. Buy now and save yourself five bucks! Jesse, excellent work and I can't wait to see the new version.

Otherwise I like the app. Without this problem, though, it'd still only get 3 stars, because it lacks any updated features since purchased. I'd love to give it 5 if the dev fixed the fatal undo flaw and brought syncing and encrypting features up with the times.

This app suffers from one man taking on too much on his own, which creates serious lag in updates. WriteRoom is playing catchup on iOS and as stagnated on the Mac. Despite this being a serviceable app, I am moving on to Elements. Jessie promises some of its features are being developed for PlainText/WriteRoom, but I have lost faith. He really needs to consider getting some help sharing the load.

I've used this app for almost 2 years now. I wrote a 32,000 word document that I turned into a book while traveling via motorcycle. Have written countless other documents and am writing the last chapter of a 20,000 word book from my most recent road trip. ALL written on the iPhone with WriteRoom and I have never had any problems at all. Just free, distraction free writing. I will check out this developer's new PlainText app, but frankly... I'm not looking anywhere else for my writing needs because WriteRoom does exactly what I need it to and does it easily without hiccups. DropBox support and being universal will be nice though... so I'm anxiously awaiting the new update. Just hope it hasn't taken a backseat to PlainText in the interim.

I know it's been a long wait. But you can get an early preview of the next WriteRoom release. Search the app store for my new free (ad supported) app "PlainText". The next version of WriteRoom (free update, no ads) will be based off the PlainText code, adding more preferences, search, etc. I'm sorry it's taken so long. PlainText looks simple, but the custom UI and Dropbox sync were significant time syncs.

This is what the developer, Jesse Grossjean, offers (see below) after hanging his customer base out to dry for FIVE MONTHS, blithely ignoring repeated and urgent pleas asking him to fix WriteRoom's many workflow-killing bugs, all well documented in these reviews. Easier to get forgiveness than permission, Jesse? Now you've announced Plaintext, but why should users trust you again after such cavalier treatment? Apology is not restitution, and this guy owes his customers more than "I'm sorry."
