What I like about Audubon Butterflies is that a world renowned expert, Rick Cech, has produced this major update from the book. That makes it pretty authoritative, in my mind. From what I can find, there is nothing like this in terms of comprehensive coverage of Butterflies. The photography on my iPad is simply amazing. Nice work!

Very disappointed in the quality of the photographs. I am surprised Audubon released a guide with images that are out of focus and in general look very ordinary. You can use them to identify the subject but many are not pleasing to look at. If you have any sense of nature photography this app will be a major disappointment!

There are a few butterfly apps now, but Audubon Guides is the only one I know of that covers all of North America with something like 650 species. Butterfly guru Rick Cech, along with Guy Tudor, is the author of an amazing book titled - Butterflies of the East Coast: An Observers Guide. I have dog-eared the heck out of mine. Luckily, he is the author to a lot of the material in this app apparently and many of the photos are his. Not sure what one reviewer was talking about in regards to photos as these are very very good and close up to let you see the field marks you need for identification. I am giving this app a 4+ and I will jump that right to a 5+ as soon as they add range maps. The great thing about Green Mountain Digital is that it seems to me they are always listening to users and improving the apps based on my experience with birds, trees and others from them. For just 14.99 I get updates for life. Can I get that with a paper book? I don't think so!

This app covers far more species than any other guide I have ever purchased. That being said, there a few more things I would like to see out of this app to help justify it's $15 price tag. 1. More photographs, particularly photographs of the larvae and pupae stages of the butterflies. 2. More moth species. Several common and distinct moth species have been left out of this guide. (ex. The Black Witch, north Americas largest moth). 3. Range maps. The descriptions of the locations where each species can be found are rather vague. Hopefully range maps (such as the ones found on butterfliesandmoths.org) will solve this problem. 4. No retina display support. Yes, this is a minor complaint, but it would be nice if the app icon and the U.I. Were updated for the iPhone 4s retina display. It really would look much more professional and detailed. That's all. Hopefully the devs will take some or all of these suggestions into account for future updates.

Outstanding. The high quality and variety of butterfly images makes identifying a species very likely. Common and rare species are featured and the descriptive text is the most up-to-date available. Another great app from Audubon Guides.

I am inexperienced at identifying butterflies so that might be part of the problem. One problem is that when trying to I'd a butterfly one of the sections is Swallowtail. This assumes that I can classify the butterfly as a swallowtail. Again this may only be a problem since I am a rank novice. I prefer drawings for identification over photos. A photo has too much detail such as the background and minor variations that distract the eye. In a drawing the artist can leave out these distraction so your eye can focus on the important key identifying factors.

50% increase in price with more than 50% LESS INFO than Wildflowers! Not the least bit of info from Audubon, but the next up. I bough Insects & Spiders thinking that butterflies would be included, it wasn't and only contained 26MB of info - BUT, Butterflies only has 182MB, better, but certainly not the best it could be. Especially useful would be to have range maps and two photo views - side and top. Hope ALL of the releases are FREE!

As of Feb 4 2011, this butterfly guide attempts to search for BIRDS! The help file also refers to BIRDS! I contacted the developer, and I'll write a new review when this sloppy app is fixed. Until then, buyer beware.
 Can't even begi
There are a lot of butterflies but not very many caterpillars. The pics of the ones we found last year aren't even here. So then I thought maybe I could go through the butterfly pics and each would have a pic of the caterpillar but not so. My intention was to use this as a way of teaching my 4 year old about their lifecycle when we go bug hunting this spring. There should be a way to look up each butterfly by caterpillar and vice versa.
