A serious bug was fixed that could cause the program to crash during Beta Code input.

Description

Lexiphanes is a Greek dictionary for your iPhone. It contains editions of the Liddell-Scott-Jones Greek-English Lexicon and Autenrieths Homeric Lexicon.
Lexiphanes is really fast, with a slick and modern iPhone interface. It shows you the short definition of a word so you dont need to visit the whole entry. You can bookmark a word and come back to it later.
Lexiphanes can even convert Greek numerals to and from regular (Arabic) notation.
The short definitions feature was automatically generated from the text of the dictionaries. Its not perfect. We need your help! You can make changes and theyll be sent to us automatically.
Please read Lexidiums Instructions sheet carefully to learn how to input Greek characters. You can either turn on the Greek keyboard (new in OS 3.0) or you can use beta code input. Both work just fine.

Oh, to have had this (and its companion Latin app, Lexidion) when I was an undergrad toting the mere abridged Liddell and mere Cassell's Latin across campus. Here we have a full LSJ, complete with citation of classical usages and morphology. It is astonishingly fast--much faster than Perseus' on-line LSJ--and the user interface is, yes, elegant. All this at a student price, without adding an ounce to the backpack. As a bonus, it converts Arabic numerals into Greek numerals and vice-versa!

I recently converted to using this after many months with Greek-English Lexicon app. However, this has a very usable and pleasant to look at UI and is much faster--instantaneous. The short definition feature is great also; great idea. It's also less expensive than the competition, although it would justly be able to charge more. I'm grateful for the time put into it because it really shows. I use it a few times a day when I don't actually have my Middle Liddell with me.I only want two more features: the ability to tap on other words within a definition to take me to the related words that show up. Also, I know some people love keyboard click sounds so it might benefit the developer to add them for appeasement sake.

Works quickly and smoothly; thank you for creating this. Might you also create an app, perhaps linked to the Perseus Project, that allows one to read Homer or other important Greek literature on the iPhone. Safari doesn't work great for that.

This is a great app to have when you don't feel like lugging around a Greek dictionary The only reason this didn't get five stars was because I would love to see a parse function like the one included in the Lexidium Latin Dictionary. Still, for two bucks you get far more than your moneys worth!

Its fast and easy to use. It saves tons of time simply not flipping through the paper lexicon. I would love to see an iPad-formatted version, even though there is no Greek keyboard yet. Also, how do I input a final Sigma - the lunate sigma? It seems like this software won't accept a normal sigma as final.

I give this application five stars because it is simply an outstanding value. For $1.99, you get the entire text of the "big" LSJ lexicon--available from Oxford at $180 the last time I checked (though the print version does contain some copyrighted updates that this one lacks). This is the standard reference dictionary of Ancient Greek that every serious student of the language must use. Plus the useful Autenreith Homeric lexicon has been thrown in as a bonus. I own both of these hard copy books, but Lexiphanes is so much faster, more portable, and easier to access that I find myself using it much more (I am a Classics graduate student).The same database containing these two lexicons is available for free on the Perseus website, but the website is often slow and/or down; Lexiphanes puts the entire database on your iPhone, so it is much faster to access. The iPhone interface is also easier to use than Perseus's: being able to enter the characters in in Greek (just install the Greek keyboard in your Options menu), and being able to see an instantaneous display of the words that match your entry makes it easier to quickly find the word you're looking for. So this program is a fine value, and well worth the price. However, there is still room for improvement, both in the interface and in the Perseus database itself:INTERFACE SUGGESTIONS:1. SEARCH FEATURE WITHIN DEFINITION. Entries are much easier to read in this format than in the printed LSJ, which barely breaks up the text at all. However, for some of the longer entries, there is still a large block of dense text to sift through. (The typical user of this lexicon will be using it along with a Greek text he is reading, and will be searching the entry for a specific passage). A search feature--the equivalent of "Control F" in an internet browser or word processor window--could make it easier to quickly find a specific citation within an entry.2. LINKS WITHIN ENTRIES. Most of the definitions contain many Greek words. Many consist entirely of a reference to another entry: e.g. the definition for ????????? is simply "see ????????". If this word could be clicked as a hyperlink to the entry for ???????? (as it can on the Perseus website), it would make navigating the dictionary much swifter. 3. WORD PARSER. The Perseus website will automatically parse conjugated or declined forms: that is, if I enter ????, it can recognize this as the future tense of ????. This ability would be a great benefit for Lexiphanes (and would really be necessary in order to make links within entries work). I understand that the inclusion of such a parsing program would probably make Lexiphanes a more expensive program; I would happily be willing to pay more for this feature.DATABASE SUGGESTIONSWhile the short definitions are often a helpful feature, this data (being auto-generated by an algorithm that analyzes the full definition) is extremely buggy. The ability to update these definitions is wonderful; I have changed dozens while using the program. What is even more exciting is the thought that, as I update the short definitions, my suggestions are being submitted to someone who can actually make these changes to the main database. Assuming that hundreds of other people are doing the same, this is a great system for eventually fixing the problem with the short definitions.The text of the database itself has many similar problems. Many of the definitions are listed under the wrong entry: e.g. in addition to the entry from ? as a letter of the alphabet, there are three other entries that are just the letter ?. The first is obviously part of the definition that should be attached to ?π????; the second from ????, etc. There are plenty of these; there are also words that seem to be missing entirely. Today I discovered there is no LSJ entry for ????????, though the print version has a quite extensive entry for this word. Perhaps it is misfiled under some other heading? Any database of such a large and difficult text is bound to contain mistakes like these. They are especially difficult to correct because the mistakes are non-obvious, and the material is difficult to sift through. It would be good to be able to make these sorts of corrections and submit them for the purpose of improving the database, just as we can with the short entries. Such a community participation project could go a long way toward improving the overall database. (It might also allow us to fix some of the problems with the LSJ itself: e.g. definitions of risque words are only in Latin, or are misleadingly vague: ????? (to have sex) is defined as Latin 'coire'; ???? (to defecate, although a more appropriate definition might be one I can't write in this iTunes review) is defined as "to ease oneself".I give these suggestions because I am excited about the possibility of the project. But even as it stands, this is a piece of software that no Classicist (who owns an iPhone or iPod touch) should be without. It has already saved me quite a bit of time and headache; I wish I'd had it for the whole of my Greek-reading career!
