I really wanted Garmin to put out an app, but this one does not store the map on the device, this means if you are out of service you are out of luck. I need something I can rely on always when I am driving, there are plenty of times I am out service or on Edge. I bought it anyway (cause that is the kind of guy I am and my wife loves Garmin) but the map downloading was slow even on Wi-fi. How many times have you seen the blue dot in a sea of gray on google maps? Same thing will happen to you here.

Cons: 1. The voice audio is so bad it is hard to understand. Sounds very muffled. (This is not a prolem i have with the Tom Tom app) 2. GPS seems to take longer to respond to movement. (Once again compared to the Tom Tom app) Pros: 1. App startup time is quick and menus are very fast to navigate. 2. The app looks good. Other important info: Maps are not stored on your device but are downloaded as you go. This might be a dealbreajer for some people but i dont mind personally.

"Always up to date" apparently means "downloaded every time from Garmin's servers." I downloaded this, intending to replace my old StreetPilot hardware (onboard maps with the latest updates) and instead found it completely useless on my current rural Texas road trip. Likewise, an AT&T or Garmin service outage could leave you completely stranded. A GPS must be, above all else, reliable. Come on, Garmin, I have 8GB of free space on my phone and a limited AT&T data plan. Give us a map pack to download to install through iTunes. I do not recommend this app at all until something changes.

Good first try, but the turn by turn voice sounds like it's been processed through a coffee can. Application footprint is VERY attractive. Small, loads fast, and is stable. The UI is one if the best out there. A little jittery, but fantastically well thought-out. Everything you need and nothing you don't. Large buttons are a plus, too. (My major issue with Navigon is the small, clunky UI) Biggest qualm: no map caching. I live in upstate NY and have NO signal for at least an hour during most trips. At least allow us to cache per-state, or by route. Fix the voice issues and the map caching, and this would be the king of Nav apps. 5 stars, especially at $40. Until those two major issues, 2 stars is where it stays.

I'll give this 2 stars for now as maps are very slow to load and while driving I frequently don't have a map to look at do to the slowness. Otherwise nice interface and very easy to use. Will agree with previous reviewers that the voice is very bad.

As with all Garmin products I have and currently own(ed), this is probably going to become a favourite. Currently the only thing mising is a way to cut down on map detail, which would presumably allow faster loading of the map data (similar as to the effect when using Garmin's Nuvi GPS line). Overall, impressed with the amount of info contained - now we just need to take this app outside of 3G range and see how it performs there. So far thus great, and long overdue given that TomTom has had a similar app on the market for quite a while now.

Voice quality needs work / no demo mode / faster maps on IPad over IPhone 4 / general impression is product was released too early / does not compare to Tom-Tom, Navagon, et all.

The map caching won't be a huge issue for me, however...the voice is horrid. Nice first try, however this app needs some work. Hopefully this app won't languish like Garmin's Mac OSX based products. This should be updated with an understandable voice immediately.

However Garmin needs to address the map storage issue. As it stands now, this version is only as good as your cellular connection, which in this part if the country means "don't leave the Interstate". Still, I'm optimistic that they will produce an update that allows for the caching of map data.

The thing I love about Garmin software is it's ease of use. I have tried the big 3 now. (navagon, TomTom, Nuvi) an I have to say. This comes in third. The maps are extremely unresponsive and SLOW... The fact that they don't even give you the option to download them really annoys me. Also, you can't customize anything. Example... I would like to have the option to set the over the speed limit alert speed. Anyway. I hope there will be some big updates coming in the near future. In the meantime... I'll be sticking with navigon.

I can't imagine Garmin is proud of this app. Who reviewed it? Did they even use it? It's full of bugs and the maps are incredibly slow. Missing features on their base model nav units. This was really rushed out the door. A significant update is in order to make me feel like I'm getting my money's worth.

I have always liked my garmin and I am happy that they finally got their act together and brought it to the iPhone. So far it seems good. There are some jitters with the first release (like scrolling through a list with on/off buttons has weird ui behavior). We'll see how it goes with more use. I like that the size of the app is small. However I am not sure I like having to download the maps in real time. That won't be good for those with the smaller data plans or areas without service. It would be better if there was a way to cache the states you want or use your finger on a map to select the area you want to be cached. I wonder if they will bring out their own version of the car kit like tom-tom did. UPDATE: Used it and it isn't great. The the voice is very weird and there is no other options. The navigation isn't great. It takes longer than it seems it should to calculate a route and sometimes freezes. The iPod controls don't always work. The music playback volume has something funky going on. Hopefully updates will come quick. If you are deciding between this and tomtom the tom-tom app is the better.

So Garmin finally comes out with an iPhone app... and it's awful!!! This app is not even close to their standards for the Nuvi or other PNDs. Here's my list of flaws (still growing as I use the app more): 1) The voice announcements are painful! The voice sounds like it was recorded over a cell phone with bad reception. Like when you're listening to an AM radio station that's barely in range. And there are 2 different voice types depending on the type of announcement. Why not just use one good one?? 2) Maps are painfully slow to download!! It's like browsing web pages in the late 1990s using a dial-up phone modem. Tick, tick, tick... one little map tile at a time. 3) iPod controls are broken. Couldn't pause or skip tracks. 4) Volume control is broken. The volume of music depends on what page you're looking at (maps vs. directions). 5) No 3D maps in walk mode. 6) The weather feature is useless. It gave me the weather at an airport 20 miles away from where I was driving. I live in a coastal area with many micro-climates, so 20 miles inland is often very different. 7) The traffic feature is equally as useless. It doesn't show live overlays -- just tells you whether there are any incidents on your route. So far this app is a colossal failure! Waste of $40!!!

I frequently use navigation on my iPhone while connected to my car stereo and either listen to on-board music, pandora, slacker radio or use TuneIn Radio at the same time on my iphone 4. When I play audio in the background with the Garmin app open, it dims the background audio about 15 dB and then when the app speaks over it, it's considerably louder. At a stop light, I clicked the back arrow in the app to look at some settings and the background audio got really loud as I had adjusted the stereo to compensate for the low level. When going back to the map view, the audio dimmed again and stayed that way. This is really annoying and requires constant adjustment. The Tom Tom and Navigon apps do just the opposite in that they play background audio at the normal level and then dim it only when speaking a direction update, then returning to normal levels. I should mention that I connect the iPhone 4 to my stereo through the headphone jack as my car kit has an inline mic. I don't know if the results would be the same through the dock connector. I contacted Garmin support and asked them to document this as a bug.

I loved MotionX, but it began to get too busy and I never liked the POI feature. It's packed full of features, and at an amazing price, but I wanted something that had everything I wanted and nothing more. On a recent trip, we used the old Garmin unit in the car and I missed its simplicity. I was happy to see Garmin came out swinging with this... Cons- 1) As several have mentioned, no cache feature (while you lose your location, it would be nice to have it revert to an old school map so at least you can use it). 2) HORRIBLE voice, this needs to get fixed pronto because it is terrible. Sounds like she has laryngitis and a pillow over her mouth. Pros- 1) Beautiful interface and easy to use, smooth and responsive and fast! 2) Love the search bar at the top of the home screen (just found that!) 3) Weather and traffic work great 4) Love that it posts the speed limits and warns if you go over Overall, this has won me over (over MotionX), and I look forward to future updates (hopefully the first one deals with the voice)

I like this gps mainly due to the lifetime maps and traffic. Also that it is a very small download and only pulls the map info it needs when it needs it. And lastly that it is the Garmin version with great directions and ease of use What it needs to be 100% perfect is - voice command ability - 3d map in "map view" for non-destination travel - a few of the other smaller features of some of the other gps apps. Overall a great job by Garmin. I hope they add what's missing though.
