Now all it needs is some effects, in-app website picture/art sharing to Flickr, Photobucket, DeviantART, and Facebook and the option to upgrade iPhone Brushes to iPad compatibility for $0.99

Really great app! Out of all the mobile painting apps, Brushes is my favorite! It's very easy to use, and get around with switching colores and brushes!

I have loved this app on my 3G. But it has steadily degraded. Now I have no erase function, and the brushes don't all work. There are other bugs as well. I sent a message to support before submitting this, but have received no reply. Can anyone help?

Really great app! Out of all the mobile painting apps, Brushes is my favorite! It's very easy to use, and get around with switching colores and brushes! You really only need one brush, but there are tons to choose from which is pretty awesome. It would be way cool if it recorded you painting and can playback right on your device like Colors! But even without that, still an amazing app!

Update works well after reset. Still the best painting app out there, the smoothness of the zoom is great. Would like to see a smudge tool, and have the ability to save as psd with layers.

So I have been painting with both Brushes and Colors! now for a few days as a break from work, I spend my workday painting in both photoshop and painter. Here is what I have noticed about the 2 apps.• Both are great for painting. Colors gets kudos for having come up with a dynamic way to change brush size and opacity while painting by tilting the phone. It isn't intuitive but you catch on to it in just a minute or two.• Brushes gets a point for a better zoom and scroll. Colors! seems to only zoom in large increments while the zoom on Brushes is super fluid and allows you to zoom at any level you want between 100 and 300%.• Colors! wins on the color palette design but that is more of an aesthetic choice than a functionality issue.• Colors! has different brush options that Brushes does. Brushes gives you three brush types from smooth to a brush that shows a hairy, natural media stroke. Colors! allows you to choose hard edge or soft edge brushes and whether to use the tilt accelarometer to control dynamic opacity or size. All in all, I would give the advantage here to Colors!.• One last thing. Brushes seems more responsive overall than Colors! to me, especially when using undo. Also, Brushes seems to do a much better job of anti-aliasing the artwork. The images I made so far in Colors! all have a more pixelated look to them than the Brushes images, which are smooth even when zoomed in. Brushes also has a nice fill tool which can be used at low opacity to get a glazing effect.• Brushes interface is absent while you are painting. I like that since Colors! tool bar is always present and I have hit it a few times while painting the lower part of the screen.• I love the play feature in Colors! where you can watch a sped up replay of the painting being made. This is move of a gimik feature for me but still really cool.It is hard to pick a winner between these two awesome programs. Colors! big selling point to me is the use of the tilt accelarometer while Brushes has a press and hold eyedropper feature and smooth zooming. Brushes feels a little slicker so far but that is just my experience.

I really love the new additions. This drawing app has almost everything I wanted out of it now. The only thing I would suggest to add now is to make it so you can set your own point of touch. What I mean is that when you touch the screen the drawing line would start somewhere above the finger. My biggest issue is that I can't see what I am drawing b/c my finger is blocking the view, but this would solve everything.

In my experience with Brushes, I've been frustrated doing any sort of stipling, spattering, dry brushing or scrumbling sort of strokes. I had planned to send in a request for features addressing this, but before I even sent it, an update added a well thought out solution, adding even more functionality than I sought. This shows the developers are constantly looking to improve the app, and consider the total solution and usability, not just individual feature requests. Well done! Now back to painting...
 Art Nerd
The function is nice but for all of the work I put in it only outputs the image at 4x6 @ 72 dpi. This is too low res to use for anything other than viewing. I have trouble believing this was used to create a new yorker magazine cover based on my professional knowledge of print resolution. Am I missing a resolution setting somewhere?

I've tried both Colors and Brushes, and while both are nice painting applications, I prefer Brushes at this point. One stand out feature in Brushes is that you can use a photo from the Camera or Photo Album, which is great for importing sketches or painting over photos. The three brush options in Brushes produces a more painterly result (Colors has only one round brush shape). The zoom control on Brushes is much more refined and smooth than Colors, which only zooms in large increments. With Brushes you can paint to the edge of the canvas, while in Colors it is currently impossible to do so (and if you have a brush offset this is very obvious). I thought the brush offset in Colors would be a must have feature, but in practice it is difficult to tell where the brush line will start when using it, so in Brushes I don't miss this feature. The use of the accelerometer to change brush opacity in Colors works okay, but is a little fiddly. More brush shapes seems a more important feature.I prefer the color picker in Colors, as it seems much more intuitive to use. The eyedropper in Colors seems a better implementation also. However, I do like that you can change brush color, size, and opacity within one screen in Colors. The undo feature in Colors remembers undo states from session to session through the replay feature. Although I don't need a replay of how the drawing was made, I would like Brushes to save multiple undo steps (perhaps a user-defined number?) between sessions. That being said, the undo/redo feature during a Brushes painting session is both quick, effective, and more than adequate.Although the Colors website showcases many very detailed paintings made with Colors, I have a feeling that most were made with the Nintendo DS version of Colors. Of course the DS has a stylus, so I don't feel the website images are a good representation of what can be done with the iPhone version.

New brushes are wonderful! Now undoubtedly one of the best drawing programs. Love the brush textures, but Please increase pixel #! In paintbook you can zoom in and actually do detail. Here, the low res gets in the way. More brushes is a must also!

It doesn't have the most features, it doesn't have really fancy bells & whistles, but this is the only drawing app I actually find myself using. I've used many free & paid-for drawing apps, and I can't really explain it, but for some reason these guys nailed the interface. Maybe it's that it's so simple, it gets out of the way of actually painting. I tried the others, but I just never found myself using them. It may not seem like it's great shakes from the description, but trust me, it shines.

I own Brushes and Sketchbook Mobile. After using both for some time now I have to say Sketchbook is definitely better. The workflow in Sketchbook is MUCH smoother, the interface is much more thought out, and the brushes overall have a much more "fluid" feeling to them. Brushes for iPhone definitely isn't a bad app; Autodesk Sketchbook is just better. Brushes for the iPad looks great, but I'll be holding out for a version of Autodesk Sketchbook there as well. @fingerpencil

This is a great app for artists and I realy like it BUT there is something that is a bit missleading in this add. It says you can save out your brushes paintings to your computer at much larger scale. However unless your computer is a Mac it will not export anything larger than a thumbnail size. Change this feature to include Windows based systems and this will be the best app I have downloaded. I want to use this app in my work but simply can not. If I had knownof this limitation I would not have purchased it. Fix it and my rating goes to an easy 5.

I tried several free paint apps and did a lot of research on paid apps, before deciding on Brushes and I am certain I made a good decision. If you want to have any detail in your paintings, you'll need one of the paid apps. The free versions are lacking in either zoom, opacity settings or the ability to undo. Brushes has excellent implementation of all of these features and more.In particular, I compared this to the apps Colors, Squiggles and Flipbook, which are all good, but I found Brushes to be a perfect fit for my needs.Update: The new version lets you access your paintings from your computer via wi-fi! Great additionAlso, anything painted with the new version, when transferred to your computer, can be played back to see how it was painted.Best of all, you can export new paintings at higher resolution than it was originally painted at! It uses the original brush strokes played back at high-res, so it doesn't get pixelated. Make a poster size print from your brushes paintings!!
 Doug Prince
Personally I like Sketchbook Pro better. The brushes have a much better feel to them.
 Casey James Bas
The title says it all; a fantastically solid paint program. I would love to see the accelerometer used to control opacity (and if it provides more than one dimension of data, brush size) - enabled only by a significant degree of tilt so as to prevent accidental adjustments.
 LP 550-2
Yeah this app is one of the best in my iPhone.. It is very capable.. But I have some requests from the developers: 1. More layers 2. Higher res. 3. Smudge tool Please please add thease stuff or I'm gonna die... Please!!
