I have tried a number of chess programs, and have tChess Pro, Shredder, Glaurung, Mastersoft's Chess and Fritz Chess for iPhone in my iPhone now. I use Fritz 12 and Shredder on my computers. The greatest feature of Fritz, in addition to its strong engine, is the exceptional facility for downloading games from the Chessbase database. While reading chess books, I can usually find the game being described in the book through Fritz Chess, and can then follow the game move by move, as it is being commented in the book. Have done it with Mikhail Tal's book of his Life in Chess, and it was a stupendous study tool - also fun to run the engine analysis concurrently with the discussion in the book. This alone is worth what you're asking for this app. The engine is good, the screen is responsive, the layout is useful. However, Fritz Chess can be improved upon when it comes to intuitive interactivity. I find the board setup cumbersome, particularly after having tried that of tChess Pro. I don't see why I should have to choose-and-drag every piece, when I should be able to dot eight pawns into their place on the board, after having chosen the "pawn" category. Nor do I buy the manner in which Fritz Chess uses screen real estate, particularly for the analysis board, which becomes too small for comfort. I see from other reviews that I'm not alone in this assessment. Make having captured pieces visible an option, and enlarge the analysis board to cover the large white area that surrounds it now - that will make the use I mention above even more convenient. When I try going out of the analysis screen to the larger sized one, from a position in a downloaded game, I can't navigate through the game. The program thinks I want to play that position, when what I want to do is just have a larger screen (it's small, you have to see it to believe how small the analysis board is. Should be about ten minutes worth of work for the programmer to fix that.) But these are nitpicks. I'm extremely satisfied with my Fritz 12 on my Mac (I use it with Bootcamp, and boot up in Windows.) Having Fritz Chess in my iPhone means I won't need to balance laptop and chessbook at once, when going through books as brilliant as Tal's and others. And you really have to try this function in Fritz Chess to believe it - it's a fantastic way of going through games and reviewing the lines discussed by the authors. One last point - having Fritz Chess with access to the Chessbase database on an iPad will make me buy the iPad.

1. Strength: plays decent games at ajustable, realistic elo levels. (not trivial to accomplish, better than shredder) Auto flip in 2 players mode. Opening/ last move hints with graphical marks. 2. Weakness: limited features. No puzzles, rating meter, alternative chess sets. Cannot disable board border to enlarge play area...etc. Board too small in review/analysis mode!! The interface has some nice features but does not measure up to its engine. Overall shredder has probably the best human interface of all and many other iPhone chess has more logical interface. But Fritz probably worth the $5 promotion price considering its engine playing strength, and capability to load PGN from Internet. For some just want to have a good computer opponent. Suggestion: add shredder-like arrow for best next move in analysis mode and make board BIGGER. It's one of the most useful, and underrated feature for reviewing games. If you show the next move directly on the board there is no need to waste screen real estate to display the PGN and boarder. May also use the horizontal mode to show a larger board or add score arrow like shredder to help playing or reviewing.

As a casual player, I have never memorized the openings which has made many of my games a little on the "samey" side. I really enjoy the way Fritz can be configured to show you the book openings. It makes a great way to learn proper openings without getting in a rut. If I could suggest an advantage indicator like Fritz for pc or Shredder for itouch/iphone... It would round things out nicely. More than satisfied.

Of course, it also has the highly respected FRITZ chess engine, which is tough enough to beat probably 99% of all chess players. Unlike apps like Shredder, the developers actually update Fritz and you can actually suggest features on their Facebook page (with a response!). I used to be quite an active USCF member, but I haven't played chess in a while. I'm trying to get back into the game, with help from games like Fritz (both on iDevice and computer).

Haven't tried them all but this is one of the best chess apps outthere, particularly with the latest version that added PGN import and online database. The engine us pretty strong also. The user interface is one of the best.

I shopped around before actually buying a chess program for my iPhone. Fritz Chess has not disappointed me. I love the database. I love the option to import PGN (though I haven't had a need to use it yet, nice to have the option). I love the fact that I can set up positions. I love the fact that I can run analysis on my phone! This is the future. This app had every feature I wanted in a chess phone app, and I am really happy I paid a few extra dollars for a really solid program.

Fritz Chess on the iPhone is great. No problems at all. I like the built in database of openings, a good learning tool. Just installing it on my Son's iPod Touch as well...

I couldn't find the database before but it is there. I apologize for the bad review. It can be improved though by making it easier to find and making the database board larger like when you're actually playing. Other than this great app sorry again for complaining earlier but it was really hard to find the database

Although I am a huge fan of chessbase software & the Fritz family engines, this app does not live up to the Fritz name in my opinion. I do regret purchasing it now. A far superior app would be Hiarcs or Shredder if you are seeking to purchase a quality chess engine app (Hiarcs being my personal choice). If you want something free then Glaurung is probably the best among the freebies. BTW, where is this game database this app is supposed to have? I cannot find it !

I love it!!! but using the game analysis is a bit lame sometimes becuase I can't see all the potential braches and how they affect the position of the game... (like how much is one move relative to another) also, did anyone else noticed that when you use the 'hint' option, it doesn't always give the best move? Like I ended up losing a bishop to a pawn with no positional benefit when I could've trades it for a knight... :/

Would be much better if there were an option to review the moves of a game in progress without the engine automatically starting to analyze the position, and if saving the game did not always ask for the name (for example, if I open a game and make a few moves then save it, I don't really want to type in a new filename). PGN import via copy/paste is good, but it doesn't tolerate slightly malformed PGN (it demands that the last character be an asterisk, rather than assuming the end of the file is the end of the move list, as other apps do). Overall, a nice game, but the above quirks make it very difficult to use for playing chess by email.
