This is too cool! I thought recording my guitar into the phone was going to sound lame because that's how those cheesy guitar cable adapters sound, but guitar jack is awesome! Finally, a real interface for recording on the go. I can't believe I just tracked a demo with guitar and voice that was so good we were able to use the tracks from fourtrack in the final mix.
Until last week this was my favorite recorder and an easy 5 stars. The update that came out last week makes the program unuseable. It now records a loud (and I mean loud) buzzing the overcomes any other input. I have used it on my ipod touch with a blue mikey and on my ipad with the internal mike and get the same awful results.
I have to find another solution until you fix what you have destroyed. What a waste. Will happily upgrade to 5 stars when you fix this.
Four track is back and better than ever. Currently, I have only been using 4 track to record live jam sessions but it has been 100% glitch free for me. I'm excited! This is easily the best version of 4Track yet! I cannot wait to get back into recording multitrack songs! I have been using 4Track since they first came out and let me tell you, they have come a LONG way! I appreciate your continued dedication to this app!! If you're debating whether or not to get this app, do it!! You will not be disappointed!
OLD REVIEW (3.1.3)
This app is the only one I know that consistently gets worst after every update! I remember the days when this app use to work beautifully...now, I'm lucky if I can get this app to even open...You guys need to start from scratch because you are making this app worthless...fix it or refund my money!!!!! I deducted another star.
I deducted a couple of stars due to the fact that this app is crashes quite often. I understand that it's a $10 multi-track but this app still needs some work. It constantly crashes on me forcing me to exit the program and reopen it. It's also very annoying when I'm almost done with a track and then WHAM! The damn thing glitches and now I have to rerecord that track. Your previous update significant increased the stability but it's still not complete. Please fix and update this app because I really like this program and of would easily be one of my most frequently used apps it the stability issue is resolved.
I previously wrote an excellent review for this product but under more investigation i have found, as did many others, thats this app is almost 100% worthless. I have been trying all day to get one song recorded successfully but this is not a easy task.
I'll record a melody on my guitar and then (try) to lay down some verse but the damn thing skips or glitches and then the timing goes out the window. This happens 99.9% of the time proving that its almost impossible to record multiple tracks
Until this is fixed, the apps is nothing more then a fancy one-track recorder which will cost you $10.00
I will say, as i did before, this app has a great future if this issue is resolved. I look forward to future updates and, as always, i will credit 5-stars to this app once this issue is resolved.
Other minor issues: I think some effects would be cool but if it were to compromise the intergrity and stability of the program, i would much rather do without them.
Near perfect Sonoma, please resolve the glitchiness of the app
I was excited to see FourTrack was updated, and hoped that finally I could use this on my iPad with the USB Camera Kit and Yeti Microphone and/or MobilePre USB interface or at least with the AmpKit LiNK.
Not only does this update fail to address that issue, but now, even the built-in microphone on the iPad fails to work. Just distortion and noise.
But wait, there's StudioTrack specifically written for the iPad, right? And it's only $40! Guess what folks, they haven't updated that product since last May, and it STILL doesn't work with USB audio on the iPad either! It's the only major iPad audio product I own that doesn't work at all with USB audio.
Sonoma does a great job of building a pretty interface and marketing their products. It's really a shame they don't even come close in functionality, testing or support.
This is an awesome idea... 5/5 for sure if it lived up to the reviews and the description. I'm a little skeptical whether these reviewers actually used the program very much for serious digital audio, though. The first thing I did was record myself saying "check 1" on track 1, "check 2" on track 2 and so on for all 4 tracks and it worked smashingly. I downloaded Audacity and did the WIFI sync which worked perfectly as well. So far so good. Once I got home I dug my six-string out of the closet, tuned it (worth the ten bucks just for that!!) and set about multi-tracking. The audio was as good as you could expect for the iphone internal/headphone mic but there were some serious problems. Several times (usually while laying down a second or third track) I got some garbled noise that ruined the current track. Kind of annoying when 2 minutes deep into a Down By the River solo (c'mon, you know you do it too). Furthermore, the program crashed twice (iphone froze for about 30-45 sec, then dropped to springboard). It was just generally buggy and felt like I was really taxing the processor and teetering on the edge of disaster at all times. All in all it was a little frustrating but I was able to get a couple decent tracks. MAYBE worth the ten bucks just for coolness and the fact that (if you're patient) you can end up with a decent multi-track recording (no latency issues, the by way... very nice). If it were more stable it would be well worth the money and more. This could be a great practice tool and a way to quickly hash out some ideas, but don't believe the yahoo telling you it replaces a $500 piece of equipment.
This is a tremendous breakthrough in personal and portable music production. Yep, It works. 4 tracks. No latency. Multiple songs. Cut in and out on tracks. Volume controls during playback. Pan tracks left and right. No e.q. no effects. only one track at a time . . . but think about it, 10 dollars for multi-pass, multitrack recording is huge. In 30 years of producing music for broadcast I have not seen a more useful tool for testing and recording musical ideas outside the studio.Bravo Sonoma! Add a delay, reverb and importing/exporting of individual tracks and we'll have people making good recordings everywhere.
Problematic:1.Keeps crashing. 2.After the first track is recorded the 2nd/3rd/and 4th distort or don't pick up at all when using an iphone or belkin headset/microphone.3.You can't delete a track after it is recorded. You can only record over it.
3G Gangsta, Gen
I have a ton of music Apps and this one is now sharing the top spot with beatmaker. Though I understand peoples requests for reverb and other processing, I think the only thing that could make this better is higher bit/sampling rate. I don't even know if that is possible on an iPhone. All I have to say is buy this now, because if they do add signal processing, or any other feature they very well should charge $20 for such an outstanding product. By the way the wi-fi sync is one of the best of it's kind. It exports the 4 tracks seperately, from a very clean web server interface. The total amount of time it took to download the program, to having a nice song idea imported into Logic was ONLY 5 MINUTES!!! I haven't felt so inclined to write such a positive review in a while. Great work. FIRST TIME EVER that I didn't feel like the developer owed me an update after my purchase! I know at least 5 dozen people that are going to love this. Can't go wrong.
Add your reverb and compression in any DAW( even Garageband).
This is a bargain at 10 freakin dollars.
This app is very well executed. It has a pleasing UI, it does what it claims to and with ease. BUT, it is missing a few important functions:1) The ability to not just overwrite a track that has already been recorder on, but completely clear it.2) The ability to adjust the recording level, not only the playback level. Any good multi-track recorder needs both. The clip light is a step in the right direction, though. It would be GREAT to see:1) A menu or otherwise to select the recording input. I.E. to be able to select between the internal mic, a mic plugged into the headphone jack, a bluetooth mic, or a mic attached via the 30 pin connector. (It is less necessary, but it would be nice to see one of these for listening output as well.)2) A "snap to center" feature for the balance knobs and volume sliders so that as you drag the knob/slider and get close to center/0dB it 'snaps' to it. It is currently difficult to exactly center the balance knob and zero the volume slider.3) A "notes" field on the Song Information page.4) While I understand the aesthetic value of removing the status bar, I find it rather important to be able to check things like the time, battery life and cell reception while running the app.5) Something minor, but it would be nice to be able to turn the phone upside-down to point the internal mic at an audio source and have the screen rotate with it.Dear Mr. Developer(s): I am in no way cutting down your app. I understand the effort it takes to write a program and your app is clearly AMAZING. It by far exceeds the attention to detail that is lacking in many other apps. The above are just some things that other users and myself would like to see in the next/future updates.
Replaced a $500 piece of equipment.
The interface on this app is top notch. The response of knobs. switches and sliders are very accurate and silky smooth. The wifi sync worked flawlessly and allows each track to be downloaded separately for further personal DAW processing. The sound quality is very good considering the substandard mic on the iphone. If the rumors prove true and iphone 2.2 software includes support for audio input devices this is going to be killer with a decent mic. A couple of things I would love to see: an optional pre recording count in, a metronome (able to use in flash mode and audio mode) and a couple of send effects. Overall I am really happy with this app! Has worked flawlessly thus far. The visual eye candy doesn't hurt either. Would love to see this companies take on a simple DAW!
It works pretty good for small recordings but when I try to overdub a 3 min track the tracks start drifting. It's impressive and i like the clean and simple approach but I can't wait for a fully working no drifting bugs. It did crash a couple times while recording as well. Glad I got this one and hopefully they fix the bugs.
I was kind of waiting for the other 4 track recorder to be able to save, but boy am I glad I waited for this. This thing is awesome. The wifi syncing works great and the program is simple, but elegant, and extremely easy to use. This is literally the FIRST program I've paid for ever and I've had the iphone since 7/11, and this is totally worth it.
i am el jeffe
No pun intended. I give 4 stars although this app is very good it could be so much more. I highly reccomnd this. Room for improvement:Looping a section and automatic punching in to recordcopy/paste and editingMetronome/tempo and metadataAbility to import a song, drumbeat or loop from other apps would be awesome. I use several apps for music including Beatmaker and idrum.Stay tuned for giant leaps in audio capabilitys for the iphone. The rumor is that iphone ver2.2 will support audio in/out through the usb port. I'm sure there is hardware on the way soon for connecting real mics to the device. As it is I compare this to my first cassette 4 track recorder, but it is in my pocket!! The controls are nice and simple, and I had no trouble transferring the tracks to my MacBook Pro.The app has crashed several times though I hope stability is improved until then it is a toy.The price is more than fair
Simple interface and quality sound. You won't be cutting an LP on this but it is a great app for getting down ideas for songs in the early stages and for working out harmonies. An absolute must have app for any songwriter. For ten dollars, you easily get $100.00 of value.
I got this app because my $400 "portable" BR 600 Boss multi-track recorder "broke" when it slipped off a padded footstool and fell 10 inches onto my padded carpeted music room floor. I used it primarily for recording ideas, and for acoustic songs, mixed in with bass, etc. When I first used this app I was amazed at the quality of sound using only the Apple iPhone earpiece w/mic. I multi-tracked the fingerpicking runs in Dear Prudence (for those too young, thats an awesome Beatles tune on their "White Album") to give the the runs added depth and I was blown away. The quality was very close to my boss BR 600. I HIGHLY recommend this to any acoustic guitar player. I also used this to record myself and 3 other friends, all of us playing acoustic guitars, and singing at an outdoor neighborhood pitch-in and again, I was amazed at the recording. I was VERY skeptical reading other reviews rating this so highly, because of other apps that get 4 or 5 star ratings that sometimes are very disappointing, but believe me, this is the BEST app, bar none for the iPhone! ONLY $9.99... are you kidding me?? WHAT a deal! I give this 10 STARS!!!!!! Others who are disappointed in any way are probably expecting this $9.99 app to equal a recording studio?? LOL It is a steal at $9.99, please keep up the awesome work at Sonoma Wire Works!! I LOVE THIS!!!
interface is awesome, but it seems like there are some drawbacks.there's no metronome which makes recordings much more difficult.an update with a metronome among other things would make the app WAAAY better
This is great. The only request I have is to allow uploading of stereo instrumental tracks via wi-fi instead of just download. That way one could easily upload an instrumental track and record lyric ideas while out and about. The instrumental could use up one track (maybe it would have to be mono), and then you have 3 tracks remaining to lay down ideas.Other than that, most useful app I think I've bought yet.
I'm trying to use it to record only a single track. Seems to record just fine, but I get regular skipping on playback. Doesn't seem to be a problem with the recording at least. I'll try to use Recorder instead until this gets worked out. I don't think it has the same problem. I don't know if Recorder has the dynamic range compression on playback feature though.
Will modify my score once this problem gets fixed.
Another more minor problem is that it seems like you can't let your phone go to sleep while transferring files. Also, if you try to transfer more than one at a time, it crashes.
Also does it actually take "disk" space for unused tracks? Seems like it.
I would love to use this app, so hopefully these problems will get fixed.
