Great app. Extremely worth it. $50 is too much only for people who don't know what this app is worth! The low-star reviews seem to be all from people who have never heard of Black's or are otherwise unaware of why one would need it. I'm very very happy that West didn't repeat the mistake made by so many smaller developers and try to charge twice for the same app by releasing a _seperate_ iPad app. Thanks for doing it the right way!

Black's Law Dictionary is THE law dictionary to have if you are in the legal community, a law student, or interested in law. I find having this dictionary in the iPad form is invaluable. That said however, the 9th Edition of the text is already out and this version is still the 8th. It is important for West (publisher) to release the electronic version update so we who use the resource have consistency.

I'm a 1st year law student and this app has done wonders for my studies. It's missing a couple of things though; it should have a Search history and also should allow you to bookmark words for a study aid.. I also have a question for the creators of this app, will you be updating the dictionary to it's current 9th edition? I hope so. It's overall a great application and a definite "must have" for all law students/lawyers. And I will gladly update my 4star review to a 5 when you guys add the history/bookmark option..

The old version was great and then I received an update. After I updated it I was no longer able to hear how the Latin words are pronounced and it's missing a lot of basic legal terms that were available in the older version. It would be great if they worked out these bugs and figured it out! I would wait to download this app until they got their bugs sorted

Can you ever think of a time you had your dictionary and not your phone? Didn't think so. I bet you can think of a hundred times you had your phone on you and no dictionary. This app rocks. It has every term I have looked up; Latin, abbreviations, new terms, procedures, citations. It has it all and it has never crashed.

I've had this app for a couple of weeks, and I can say without doubt that I use it much more than I would have used a hard copy. I always have it on me, and when doing my homework I can quickly look up a term. I can also sneak a look on it in class after 5 of my classmates failed at giving the definition of quantum meruit just in case I get called on next. It's handy and easy to use. ONE CRITICISM: There are multiple entries for the same word, and one will have the definition while the other will refer you back to the first definition. It is frustrating to essentially have to look things up twice. But still a good investment. I hope that they update it, because after 5 years, I am sure the 9th edition has some changes....

As a 1L, I debated about getting the actual tangible dictionary or purchasing the App for my iPad and iPhone. Believe me, it is 100% worth it. The fact that I can carry my Black's Law Dictionary in my pocket (iPhone) or in my backpack (iPad) is well worth it. It adds value to my iPads use. I love that it integrates with my WestLaw login and looks marvelous on the iPad. The fact that I learn how to pronounce legal terms properly is an added bonus. A cool new feature is that I can bookmark words for future reference. This is cool for a 1L that needs to quickly remember for example what "certiorari" means when the professor asks in class. My ONLY qualm is that my iPhone and iPad bookmarks do not seem to sync. Perhaps that can be fixed in a future update. In the mean time, it is still worth all 5 stars!

While a law student has access to legal dictionaries on the internet, or via law school westlaw/lexis access, it's hard to overstate how awesome it is to have Black's available at the touch of a finger. Sure, I could log on to Westlaw to look up that crazy word from my property reading, or I could even google it and get some questionable definition, but for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is my own laziness, neither of those compare to the flick, tap, and three letters I need to type to have the dictionary suggest the very word I'm looking to define. It's a luxury, but one that is well worth it.

I've been using this constantly for over a year, since 1L. Much easier than searching Westlaw, I never write reviews, but was moved to do so when they upgraded to the 9th Ed for free. But, I agree with the reviewer who liked the old icon better--the corporate logo divests it of personality.

I originally bought this app for my iphone last year during my first year of law school. The fact that I did not have to pay for the app again with the ipad is extremely convenient. Looking up definitions on the iPad and iphone is much more convenient than having the hard copy. The ability to type and find the definition at your fingertips is extremely appealing. Couple that with the text to speech and you have a must buy if you are in law school or in the legal profession.

The good and the badWhat I like most:I particularly like the links to Westlaw.What the application needs:1. A history section (of words looked up)2. Bookmarks3. The ability to browse words/definitions and to jump to letters (A - Z) in order to browse4. The ability to use wildcards in searches ( ? for single character wildcards, and for multiple wildcard)5. When the application is opened, it should open to where one last left off (when it was previously closed).6. West/Thomson Reuters should fix the bug within Westlaw (when Safari is used) that does not uniformly save the Westlaw password (when that is checked)Overall, this application is good, and can easily be made even better.
