I play chess often and wanted an app for analyzing positions on my iPhone, so when I'm playing at a coffee shop or mall without my laptop I can still analyze my games (and the games other people are playing). tChess delivers all this and more. It's extremely easy to set up positions, make moves, take them back, and turn analysis mode on and off. This is clearly an app designed by a chess player. The interface is very simple but everything is where you expect it to be. There is even an opening library which lets you look up different openings and tells you how often they're played. The computer opponent also plays a great game for my skill level. Highly recommended!

This is the best chess application I've seen on the iPad. Tons of features - and most importantly it plays a great game of chess for any skill level. The interface is intuitive and easy to pick up. I fully recommend this app to anyone interested in playing a solid game of chess. Worth every penny.

Alright, having played all the available chess apps for iPad, this is the second one that deserves a review (the other being Shredder Chess - which I tend to like a bit better). This app behaves and looks similar on both iPad and iPhone, but I'm playing on my iPad most of the time. If you like to have many options and menu hierachies, you will love this app. Whatever you do - you'll have to search for it. It *is* powerful, but it's a bit of a pain to use. Everything seems to be hidden, no visual clue given, but maybe you learn where everything is when you use it frequently. The screen looks a bit boring, pieces and board could really use some sharpening, especially in portrait mode. Thank you so much for adding landscape with the latest update, which I prefer visually, and handling the device is easier that way. What I still cannot believe is that you can't move the pieces by dragging them with your finger - first you have to select the piece and then the target square. This takes away most of the magic of a game of chess on this beautiful device. Almost every chess game I know of supports this, so please make this at least an option. The marks for the last move are cut off at the edge of the board which just proves lack of love to detail. 3D is working (although hard to move the pieces as you need to tap the squares below them) - if you absolutely need 3D chess this app is probably still the best option. 2D/3D and piece sets are a matter of taste anyway, so I'll leave this up to you. No complaints about the AI so far - but as I just started visiting a local chess club I cannot really comment on this. The option to flip pieces for one color looks neat but I am yet to find someone who likes playing this way. Feels wrong for both players instead of wrong for one player. :-) I absolutely love my iPad (and my iPhone, too, for that matter) - and I want apps that offer substantial features and are fun to use. While the features are almost on a par with Shredder (which lacks 3D but comes with lots of puzzles), unfortunately it definitely lacks refinement and the wow-factor, thus making this app a solid runner-up.

Pretty good with one major flaw: The lower rated AI opponents play well above their listed level. I am not the greatest player -- roughly a mid 1300's player. But I have played literally thousands of games against players of all levels and players rated below 1300 do NOT play nearly as well as this AI at 1100. I rarely beat the AI no matter how low the rating is listed at. I'd even say that it's easier to beat the AI once it plays at a rating above 1500. I do like the fact it resigns.

It's a cut above the the games and iPad sized chess is so much more fun than on the iPhone. And I like the ability to set the rating to whatever standard you want to play against.

This is a chess program for the iPhone (and now the iPad!) that is worthy of the platform. Not only does it come with a powerful engine, it also truly looks like a program made for the iPhone. It's stylish, elegant, streamlined and beautiful. I've had people ask me on the subway what the name of the app is. :) It's been very obviously made by a person with a love of the game and great attention to details - subtle move cues, saving your game so you can switch apps and pick up seamlessly from where you left, the ability to flip the board for multiplayer and on top of that you can enter chess board positions for in depth analysis. There's nothing like it. If you're looking for a chess program for the iPhone, this is the best choice by far.

This game is costly thus greater expectation, equate to or nearly perfection, is highly expected. I have a chess game on my pc I paid $10 for that does all the features of this game. There isn't anything this game does it doesn't do; however, many of the other game's features cannot be found on this game. You can watch pc vs. Pc play at all levels from 500 to masters. The game I am talking about is affiliated with ubi.com. I will change my rating once that change is made. Also, I can't find a feature that let's me play with other live players with their ratings posted next to their names. People expect a lot when there are many compatible chess games $7 cheaper at the app store.

I enjoy how seemingly realistic the AI works. At a lower rating, my below average skill can bank on mistakes the computer makes. I am getting better and so is the computer.

There is no reason to give this app anything other than 5 stars. It costs more than most apps, but its worth it. It doesnt have puzzles, but the game of chess is a game of the moment. puzzles help, but the fastest way to get better is to play. This app allows you to play all you want and shows how much youve improved, as well as offering the option of a hint, which is enormously helpful.

I want badly to give tChess five stars.. It's very good. BUT, it doesn't allow dragging of the pieces - this seems like it should be a given, but surprisingly, it's not. Also, I find I'm going back to my Shredder Chess in order to play (and learn) with the "puzzles" that seem to be absent on tChess. Bummer. Add these two little jigs, and I'll delete Shredder and add a star to tChess!

This is an excellent app. It is a great learning aid. I can play black or white, change sides in the middle of a game, disable the computer and play both sides, investigating alternative moves. The app has a nice hints feature. I can email the moves of a game to my computer and analyze the game on a board or with a chess game on my desktop computer. This app has helped me improve my chess playing. The app is well worth its price.

T Chess is the best app on iPhone period. It's an amazing learning tool for beginners and challenging enough for the most advanced. You can even review historic chess matches. There are so many features, it is fun to simply explore. I wasn't a chess player until I downloaded this app, now it is my favorite and most used 3rd party app. I highly recommend it to everyone. Worth every penny!!

I like that tChess is a universal binary and plays on both my iPhone 4 and iPad but in doing a head to head match, Shredder Chess made mince meat of tChess at it's highest difficulty setting (2500). The update for the retina display is a big plus - marked difference between playing on the 3GS and 4.
